Chris Remkes
Athlete Christopher Remkes, once a Filipino orphan until he was adopted by an Australian couple when he was 2 years old, brought honors to his adopted country as he won an elusive gold in men’s vault.
Standing a mere 4 feet and 10 inches (147 centimeters), Chris won the gold for men’s vault at the international 2018 Commonwealth Games, held in Gold Coast, Australia, on April 4-15.
Chris’ win, with the scores 14.866 and 14.766, marks the first time an Australian has won gold for the event in the past 24 years. The last time Australia took home the gold, won by Bret Hudson, was in 1994, according to The Courier Mail.
The diminutive 21-year-old athlete credited his small stature as the key to his victory. He said,
“My height is almost like a super power, I’m lucky to have the build I have, it means I can go fast in the air.”
But most of all, he thanked his adoptive parents for this crowning achievement. “Without my parents I wouldn’t be here today, I would probably still be in the orphanage,” said Chris.
Adopted at the age of 2 by Australian couple Mike and Dora Remkes from an orphanage in the Philippines, Chris grew up happy with “nothing but smiles and bubbly and full of life,” said Mike.
As a baby, Chris was left at a hospital when he was just 2 days old. He was later handed to the orphanage where nuns took care of him until his adoption by the Remkes.
“When we got notification from the adoption agency, we saw a photo of him and we couldn’t say no,’’ recalled Mike.
He added, “We talked to the nuns at the orphanage and they had never seen him smile or happy.”
Chris would later get into gymnastics at the age of 5 and has passionately pursued the sport until now.
His proud father said, “His passion is so strong and his journey is still continuing.”

Gymnastics sends athletes to two meets overseas
Apr 14, 2014
Below is a summarized version of my report on the two recent development trips of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP).
Pacific Rim Championships
Firstly the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships held in Vancouver Canada in which 5 athletes and 3 officials (2 coaches and a judge) were sent.
Cristina Onofre finished 23rd of 28 in the SR Girls, Katrina Evangelista finished 18th of 22 in the JR Girls, Jean N. Monteclaro (us based) finished 22 of 34 in the SR Boys, Reyland Cappellan 30th of 34 in the SR Boys. Carlos Yulo finished 20th of 21 in the JR Boys.
Yulo who started off well 8th in the box and 7th in the spring board faded in the last few events.
With all the competitors from the Philippines finishing in the bottom half of there events overall the best performer was Filam Monteclaro who managed to beat 12 other entries. All the other entries beat 5 or less of their opponents from the other countries.
Only in the SR Womens were South East Asian opponents with two Singaporeans one ahead and one behind Cristina Onofre. Athletes from US, Canada, China, Japan, Australia, Taipei and Croatia dominated this event.
Please note last place at the 2010 Asian Games was 42.4 in the womens artistic for qualifying and last in final was 41.3 and this meet is scored alot higher as its a meet for adults not an age grade meet like the Pacific Rim Champs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gymnastics_at_the_2010_Asian_Games
Gymnastics was not played in the last SEA Games.
Monteclaro score was 70.10, this is good enough for 32nd of 36 at the last Asian Games not taking into account the adjustment of points due to the fact the Asian Games is a senior meet using a higher level of scoring.
Junior Artistic Gymnastic Championships
The 13th Junior Artistic Gymnastic Championships (Youth Olympic Games Qualifying
event) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan was held from April 6-14. 2 athletes and 5 officials were sent
including delegation head and NSA President Ms. Cynthia Norton.
Ava Verdeflor was born on January 2, 1999. She trained at Airborne Gymnastics in California before moving to Texas. She has competed with WOGA since 2006.
National athlete Ava Verdeflor finished a promising 12th of 55 athletes in the girls and Albert Lopez 33rd of 62 athletes. Verdeflor score of 48.4 is good enough to beat the last three placers at Asian Games also not taking the more stricter score count into consideration., whereas Lopez 67.4 can beat four competitors only at this level.
