Canada Cup International Softball: RP Blu Girls beat Canada

The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed RP Blu Girls pull off an upset against powerhouse Canada, 6-2, in front of its home crowd to open its campaign in the Canada Cup International Softball Championship.

After beating world number 4 Australia in the World Cup of Softball XII, the RP Blu Girls have pulled off yet another upset to start their campaign in the opening round of the Canada Cup International Softball Championship in Softball City, Surrey, Canada.

The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Filipinas outclassed world no. 3 Canada, 6-2, in Pool B of the 15-team championship round robin competition. The 17th-ranked Pinay softbelles next play Chinese Taipei on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila).

In front of the home crowd, the Blu Girls built up a commanding 4-2 lead as early as the 3rd courtesy of Garie Blando’s 2 RBIs while Francesca Altomonte made a home run in the 2nd to drive in two runs.

“I’m so elated with this win by our Blu Girls over powerhouse Canada. I’m eagerly anticipating their upcoming games as they battle other top teams in the world,” said Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines president Jean Henri Lhuillier.

The Philippine national softball team has now tallied four straight wins coming from a stint in the World Cup of Softball XII in Oklahoma, USA where the Blu Girls also won against powerhouse Australia.

“The Blu Girls have proven that their wins versus world number 4 Australia and world number 10 Mexico were not a fluke. I’ve never doubted that softball is the team sport that we can be at par with the world’s best. This is a big boost to our bid to qualifying in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” added Lhuillier.

In other games, Australia beat Venezuela 3-1, Mexico blanked Quebec Rebelles 10-0, and Japan blasted NJCAA 14-2.

After upsetting Australia, the Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Blu Girls are determined to show

their best against top-ranked Japan, Canada and Puerto Rico which they all play on Friday.

 

The Philippine women’s softball team, currently ranked 17, bested world no. 4 Australia, 7-5,

to quickly bounce back from its shut-out loss to powerhouse team USA, 0-4, at the opening of

the World Cup of Softball XII on Wednesday at the Amateur Softball Association (ASA)

Hall of Fame Complex Field 4 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA (Thursday in Manila).

 

The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Filipinas led as early as the first inning courtesy of Arianne

Vallestero’s three RBIs while Fil-Am Dani Gilmore scored a solo home run. In the second

inning, Kailey Cuico doubled off to drive in three runs to secure the win.

 

“Our RP Blu Girls is off to an impressive start. They’ve just beaten world no. 4 Australia and likewise put up a gallant stand against 2nd-ranked USA. All the training and preparations are now paying off. I know our team will pull off more surprise wins in their coming games. I believe we have what it takes to come up with our best ever finish in the World Cup. All these are geared towards our 2020 Tokyo Olympics goal,” said Asaphil president Jean Henri Lhuillier.

 

The 17th-ranked RP Blu Girls will need to summon all their skills and determination on

Friday, July 7, 2017, as they square off with the world no. 1 Japan, 3rd ranked Canada, and

world no. 7 Puerto Rico, all in the same day, in the annual competition duly sanctioned by the

 

World Baseball Softball Confederation.

Succeeding games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 8 and 9, will be against the

United States Junior Women’s National Team and 10th ranked Mexico.

 

The national team is composed of Gabrielle Maurice, Dani Gilmore, Chelsea Suitos, Sierra

Lange, Garie Blando, Hailey Decker, Skylynne Ellazar, Kailey Cuico Riflayca Basa, Angeli

Ursabia, Mary Luisse Garde, Cristy Roa, Dione Macasu, Francesca Altomonte, Arianne

Vallestero, Ma. Celestine Palma, Lorna Adorable, Shaira Damasing, Mia Macapagal, Reese

Guevarra, Riezel Calumbres, Lovely Arago, and Lyca Basa.
