2017 Hong Kong Invitational Day 2 Report

The rest of the Report on 2017 Hong Kong Invitational Day 2 Report is being provided now.

I have been busy with work so its been at the bottom of the to do list. The Philippines

Sprinters, Hurdlers and Jumpers began their training in Hong Kong and some of them will be competing in the Asian Championships next week in India.

400m Improvements

Fil-Heritage Sprinter Trenten Beram clocked 46.99 to win Heat 1 of 3 and qualify with the

fastest time in the Heats. Beram later withdrew from the final to focus on the 4×100. Which

was 15 minutes after the final. Currently Beram leads the 400m Rankings for SEA with

46.56.

Michael Del Prado clocked 48.00 to nail his PB and win the second heat. This improved

Michael’s 48.42 from 18 May 2017. A new member of the national team. Del Prado is the

son of National Record Holder Isidro (45.57). And he now has beaten the 48.02 best time of

his older brother Isidro Del Prado Jr,. a 2013 SEA Games Gold Medalist in the 4×100. While

in the final Michael took the bronze in 48.22 (his #2 best time ever).

Edgardo Alejan now 31, the SEA Games Bronze medalist in the 400. Took his seasons best

down. Alejan clocked 47.96 to win Heat 3. While bettering his rather slow start to the season

on 18 May with 48.17. Alejan clocked 47.72 another seasons best to take the silver. While

Kawamitsu Kenta of Japan won the 400 Final in 47.31. Currently Alejan has a PB of 46.96.

Seems like the SEA Games Composition for the 4×400 Beram has the best time 46.56,

followed by Decathlete Aries Toledo 47.71, Alejan at 47.72, and then Mico Del Prado with

48.00. Caido, Cray and Bagsit are also in the SEA Games lineup for 2017.

UPDATE: As Cray and Beram did not run they ended up running Alejan, Toledo, Bagsit and

Del Prado. A respectable Bronze.

While in the 110 Hurdles Patrick Unso won in 14.02 -1.6 (his #2 ever best time). And Clinton

Kingsley Bautista finally improved on his best time of 14.22 when he took Silver at the 2014

ASEAN School Games. Bautista took the bronze in 14.20 behind Chan Chun Wung.

Especially relevant is that Bautista previous seasons best was 14.37 at the last time trials.

Eloiza Luzon took silver in 12.17 (-0.1) behind Lam On Ki 12.12. This equalled her time at last months time trial.

Four back out

Mark Harry Diones did not participate in the Triple Jump. The 2017 SEA Leader with 16.70m. Was resting up for the Asian Championships next week.

While Anfernee Lopena also pulled out of the 100 to focus on the 4×100.

Also in the 400 Hurdles Francis Medina withdrew. Hence Nguyen Anh Tu of Vietnam took s

ilver in 52.84.

Especially relevant is that Katherine Khay Santos after winning the Long Jump in 6.08m

opted to rest from the 100 Heats

2017 Hong Kong Invitational Day 2: Philippine Men’s 4×100 Breaks the 40 Second

Barrier

Hong Kong,

Philippine Men’s 4×100

The relay team of Anfernee Lopena, Patrick Unso, Archand Bagsit and Fil-Heritage sprinter

Trenten Beram clocked a new national record of 39.96 for the Philippines. While at the 2017

Hong Kong Summer Invitational meet the quartet finished second behind the Hong Kong A

Team that won in 39.77. And Hong Kong B took 3rd in 40.30.

The record broke the National record set in March at the National Open in Ilagan of Anfernee

Lopena, Trenten Beram, Jomar Udtohan, and Eric Cray of 40.29.

This shows a lot of promise despite their being no other South East Asian relay team lined up

in Hong Kong. While Eric Cray was unavailable for this relay looks to strengthen the lineup

at SEA Games. While as of now Indonesia which is training in Japan leads the Rankings with

a 39.13 National record run, followed by Thailand who clocked 39.54 at there national

championships recently. And the Philippines is ranked third in the South East Asian lists.

Last SEA Games Thailand took the Men’s Relay Gold in 38.99, followed by Singapore

39.24. And Indonesia 39.32 (then a National Record).

No 4×400 event was available.

2017 Hong Kong Invitational Athletics Day 1

Janry Ubas gets gold in Long Jump.

The small Philippines Team delegation that is training in Hong Kong to prepare for 2017

SEA Games participated int he Hong Kong Invitational on June 24.

In a lot of events the competition as always in this event was not very strong. With no South

East Asian athletes challenge the Philippine Athletes in any events today. Instead they were

pitted up against Chinese club athletes.

The team did take four golds. Archand Christian Bagsit won the 200 Meters, with the fastest

time in the heats he clocked 21.76 (-1.6) in the heats.

While Bagsit further improved on his seasons best in the Finals winningin 21.71 (-0.9)

narrowly holding off Li Chao Hsuan (Taipei) 21.77 and Li Yili . Bagsit improved on his

22.25 run from National Open, his best time is 21.54 from last year.

The second gold came from Eloiza Luzon who clocked 24.94 (-1.4) to win gold int he

Women’s 200 Meters .While Luzon improved her personal best of 24.95 from 2014. Luzon

beat Chen Ka Yi 26.55 and Julian Rueven 26.79.

The third gold came from Katherine Khay Santos who won with a 6.06m leap. This was

slightly behind her best jump of 6.08m, which was leapt at the time trials a month back.

Santos best in this event is 6.41m from 2 years ago.

Janry Ubas won the Long Jump with a leap of 7.67m. Following up from his 7.78m win in

Thai Open and 7.88m leap at the performance trials. He did enough to win. He beat Chan

Ming Lai (HKG) 7.50m and Wong Kan 7.25m.

Less impressive was Tyler Ruiz who could only manage 7.03m and placed 5th. Ruiz who

earlier in the United States had leapt 7.79m and 7.54m.

Francis Medina who is recovering from a hamstring injury opted not to run in the 400

Hurdles.

While the meet served as a good practice it didn’t reveal much indication of performance

come SEA Games.

In the 400 Heats Trenten Beram (Heat 1), Michael Del Prado (Heat 2) and Edgardo Alejan

(Heat 3) are scheduled to run. Clinton Bautista and Patrick Unso participating in the 110

Hurdles.
