Lany Cardona Adaog wins Womens Division for TEAM TITUS!
Not to be outdone was the Winner of the Women’s Division for the Pinoyathletics / Talking Chinoy Virtual 5000m.
30-Year-old Lany Cardona Adaoag of Bolinao, Pangasinan. She took the Title in the Womens Division and was the most improved athlete improving her 19:27.9 PB to 19:13 in the process.
Lany finished ahead of 4X Milo Half Marathon Champion Nhea Anne Barcena of Manila (20:14) and 2019 Palarong Pambansa 1500 and 3000M Champion Lheslie De Lima of Camarines Del Norte (20:26).
ILONGO ATHLETE ALFRENCE BRAZA UNLEASHES A DEVASTATING MASTERPIECE OF MENS 5000M RUNNING
The Pinoyathletics / Talking Chinoy Virtual 5000m Finished off with an epic final curtain closer.
Sixty athletes from across the country battled out the men and women.
The quality of competition in the men’s event generated 15 new Personal bests of the 37 men entered.
The competition was fierce, with runners digging deep to find the inspiration to give their utmost maximum effort.
But in the end, as the dust settled, there could be only one winner.
Describing a delicate moment in the Philippines Track and Field History for Long Distance in recent years?
One of the rising stars of Philippines Athletics showed even though COVID was tough, he was more stringent.
20-year-old Alfrence Braza had recently won the 10,000m BBGRUNPH Event organized by Coach Roel Ano with a time of 32:01, a new PB.
Slashing more than a minute off his previous time of 33:25.
The 2019 Palaro Pambansa Champion in the 1500 and 5000m set his PB of 15:56, which was his best time coming into this meet. And with very few competitions in 2020 due to COVID. So Alfrence Braza set out to make up for the lost time.
‘Help A Braza Out’
At Iloilo Sports Complex Oval, he clocked 15:45 to bulldoze 11 seconds off his Personal Best set 2 years ago. His teammates paced him every 800 meters to keep him on target pace. As a result, Alfrence Braza took the competition lead.
A few days later, Eduard Flores, a member of the University of the Philippines Track and Field team, and his buddy Mark Ruto traveled one 1-hour North from General Santos to Koronadal. There they encountered a now open Koronadal oval swarming with a maze of joggers.
Despite the difficulty presented by the tall Flores, another promising athlete clocked 15:30, with Ruto also rewarded with a new PB of 15:55. In addition, Flores improved from his 15:49 PB.
Like a seasoned chess player planning his strategic counter move once and had removed the queen from the board, Alfrence Braza opted to risk running again. Had Braza run slower, he might have lost his 15:45 and possibly his chance at even a Top 3 finish. But he rolled the dice and risked it all in the twilight hours of the last day of the meet.

Alfrence Braza lets the Genie out of the Bottle.
The risk proved worth it as Alfrence Braza found the lead this time on a road loop circuit in a devastating fashion.
Convincingly grabbing the top spot and creating a devastating masterpiece of 5k running with another 43 seconds off his new PB.
The new time of 15:03 is the 2nd fastest time in Philippine Athletics for the Men’s 5000m in the last 6 years.
In that period only, Sony Wagdos 14:34.73 gold at the 2019 SEA Games was better.
For his efforts, Braza netted a cash Prize of 2000 Pesos from Pinoyathletics & Talking Chinoy.
Producing a treasure chest of great men’s distance athletes is nothing new for Iloilo, having made SEA Games Champions Jimmy Dela Torre (Marathon), Herman Suizo (Marathon), and Rene Herrera (from Guimaras 5x 3k steeples), and John Lozada (800).

SUMMARY OF EVENT
You want to make athletes feel like they are at Disneyland Whenever they join a Track and Field Meet. Not at a Funeral.
-Andrew Pirie Co-Founder of Pinoyathletics
The event was a success, despite there being disputes regarding timing. Everyone, it seemed, took away a positive experience. And a need uplift during depressing COVID Times.
The event attracted 60 Participants. 37 Men and 23 Women.
The event’s high quality showed everyone giving their utmost best with 13 New PBs and 2 Unofficial new PBs in the Men’s event. And 4 New PBs in the women.
Pinoyathletics would like to take the time to thank our Co-Organizer Stephen Newtown’s’ The Talking Chinoy’, and also Mr. Jerex Quintino, who came to our rescue when the GCASH System was down and was crucial to the success of this meet. For example, managing payments and helping report performances via Strava.
We also sponsor Masiv Sports for providing free singlets to our consolation winners and a 15% discount to our participants.
Finally, all the athletes who joined this event and the coaches and supporters made this event possible.

MEDIA RELEASE
Pinoyathletics 2nd Virtual Event starts officially on January 17, in partnership with Talking Chinoy. The 5000m Event has attracted a total of 60 athletes. The event is also proudly sponsored by Masiv Sports. We now highlight some of the key athletes and their past achievements who are joining our event.
Among the Mens Division. Former UAAP 10,000M Champion Darwin Lim (Dasmarinas) has the fastest time on the entry list. The 32-year-old who resides in Dasmarinas holds the best time of 15:25 and is trained at one time by the late Rosito Andaya. A former teammate of the late great ‘Master Endurance’ Rafael Poliquit, a 2x Milo Marathon Champion.
Challenging him will be the Prince of Cebu Joey Lee (Spectrum Runners), who has a 15:33 PB. Better known as a 10k and 21k Runner. Joey Lee is also the coach of the Spectrum Runners in Cebu.
As well as athletes coming down distances. There are also athletes coming up distances. Elbren Neri (Pinoyathletics) is the UAAP 800 and 1500 Record Holder. He will try his luck in the Mens 5000m along with two athletes he coaches. Neri finished 7th at the 2017 SEA Games in the 1500m.
Eduard Flores (BBGRunPH) who was 4th in the BBGRunPH 10K event is also entered
Along with the BBGRUNPH, 10,000m Alfrence Braza (Iloilo) from Iloilo began off his senior career with a 32:01 PB a few weeks ago in the BBGRUNPH event organized by Coach Roel Ano. Braza is the Palaro 2019 Champion in the 1500 and 5000m Runs. And has already represented the Philippines at the ASEAN School Games in Indonesia.
Welfred Esporma (ARM Team Heya) completes the field of the 6 athletes that have broken 16 minutes for 5k in this event. Florendo Lapiz (Spectrum Runners) was #7, but he has had to withdraw due to feeling unwell.
On the women’s side, no Big Names. But still a wide-open field. 18-year-olds Emmalyn Tayplin (Valencia Runners Club) and Cherry Andrin of Lapu-Lapu City. Lead the list of qualifiers with the two submitting times below 19 minutes. Another talented upcoming youngster, 14-year-old Asia Paraase (Spectrum Runners) in Cebu, sits in the #3 spot.
Looking in great shape to challenge the three teenagers at 38 is former Milo Marathon 21K Champion Nheann Barcena (Barcena’s running warriors).
SEA Games Bronze medalist in Mixed Relay Duathlon Pawie Fornea (Dasmarinas), Donita Tacuyan (Pinoyathletics), and Veteran road runner Lany Cardona (Team Titus) also add to the lineup.
Perhaps the Dark Horse in this event is Lheslie De Lima of Rinconada Team in Bicol, another teenager, the Palarong Pambansa champion in 2019 in the 1500 and 3000m, secondary girls. Who is stepping up and running 5000m for the first time?
I want to note the variety of athletes in the 23 women’s entries. For example, Fornea is a Duathlete, and Erica Ruto (Team Iskolar athletics) is a sprinter, making the Palaro Finals in the 100. At the same time, Alana Halaguena (Team Titus) is the country’s top junior walkathon.
Coach Roel Ano BBGRUNPH Team contributed the most entries, with 21 Athletes represented out of the 60 on the entry list.
