We all know we should keep a training log. Some of us do, and others don’t get beyond the new season’s resolution to keep better track of our workouts. Those that do keep track often do so inconsistently. Now let America’s premier team of clinicians Jeff Salvage and Tim Seaman, help you record information vital to your race walking progress in Excellence in Training – A Race Walking Specific Training Log.

Race Walk Clinic in a Book: Review (Race Walking)
America’s premier team of clinicians Jeff Salvage and Tim Seaman’s Race Walk Clinic. In a Book beautifully illustrates textbook techniques. While it catalogs typical mistakes, race walkers can rob them of a legal race and speed. It explains why these problems exist and prescribes critical solutions to correct them.
Suppose you are ready to improve your race walking style and step up to the next level. Then pick up Race Walk Clinic – in a Book today. Our Race Walk Clinic approach is to pick up where other training materials leave off in a book. We start by grounding our discussion with a review of the correct race walking technique. But do not focus on the many aspects of technique that you can do incorrectly.
We then divide race walking technique problems into broad categories, starting with legality issues and then separating technique issues into hip, leg, arm, and posture problems. Next, we illustrate the problem with photographs of either elite race walkers or (for beginner problems) staged images for each category. We then offer remediation in two forms: exercises, drills, and stretches to improve your style and mental cues to guide your focus while race walking.
Within the educational material presented, we’ve interspersed “Tales from the Track,” a unique collection of unique stories in which great race walkers from the U.S. and worldwide retell some of their most memorable experiences. Race Walk by Training Smarter Book Review (Race Walking)
Race Walk Faster by Training Smarter is for the countless coaches who say they do not
know how to coach race walking and every athlete interested in training for our great event. Our previous texts, Race Walk Clinic – in a Book and Race Walk Like a Champion, explain race walking techniques, and the latter text contains a general overview chapter on how to train. However, that chapter alone is not enough to completely develop a systematic training schedule suited to your specific situation.
While the needs of youth, high school, collegiate, elite, and master’s athletes vary based on physiology and racing schedules, one chapter cannot cover all of these intricacies. Race Walk Faster by Training Smarter is an entire book devoted to training. We layout the information required for a race walker to train at any level, and we assume no prior knowledge related to endurance training. The concepts are not hard to learn.
Coaches of distance runners will find many of the concepts familiar.
And not surprisingly, race walking is an endurance event within the sport of track and field. Therefore, training a race walker is not much different from the principles behind training a distance runner for races of comparable length and time. Sure, race walkers take longer to complete the same distance, but concepts like periodization, proper recovery, and peaking all apply.
Also, please note the 2nd edition is not different from the first. We had a snafu with the ISBN Number. For more information and other products by the authors, please visit
I purchased this book together with the series by Jeff Savage on Race Walk Clinics and Excellence in Training. And all three are great resources for anyone who would like to start a race walk program at any level. At the same time, race Walking is quite a discipline. And I would love to see more race walkers in the different 5K and 10K races all over the world.
