Sarinas tops 100-meter run in PB in Mindanao Track League.
Article by Andrew Pirie, edited by Manolo Pedralvez
HOMETOWN favorite Jerome Sarinas ruled the men’s 100-meter dash in a personal best time of 10.93 seconds to highlight action in the second leg of the Pinoyathletics Mindanao Track League at the Poly Sports track oval in Butuan City on Sunday.
Sarinas led all the way in topping the event, besting former UAAP sprint bronze medalist and Davao del Norte’s Kenneth Paculba, who settled for silver (11.10) seconds, while Butuan City’s Christian Evanoso, a silver medalist in the meet’s first leg, was third (11.11).
The Butuan City pride surpassed his previous best of 11.17 seconds in the opening leg of the trackfest also held at the same track, slowly establishing himself as the fastest man in Mindanao.
Theresa May Cabunillas made it a sprint double for the hosts in clinching the women’s 100-meter race in a personal best of 13.97 seconds, while teammate Carol Kate Sotto was second (14.29) and Margga Pauline Bless Ligon third (14.90)
Sarinas rose to No. 2 in the national rankings in the event compiled by pinoyathletics, the event organizer behind Filipino-American Nolan Crespo, who has booked 10.76 and 10.88 seconds in recent year’s meets held in California.
Computer software was used in determining the actual times of the races. At the same time, Butuan-based Dennis Scott, a former Masters runner, personally supervised the event at the track site, according to Pinoyathletics website co-founder Andrew Pirie.
“While we had some withdrawals due to the COVID-19 restrictions, we still had a good field in the men’s 100-meter race,” said Pirie of the trackfest supported by outfitter Masiv Sports.
Masiv Sports gave away singlets and Scott medals to all the winners.
“We hope that the athletes who run in our events will be prepared for the Philippines National Open in September,” Pirie, a certified track and field coach by Athletics Australia and former Philippine Sports Commission statistician, said.
“The Mindanao Track League hopes to fill in the vacuum in the absence of track competitions in Mindanao,” Pirie stressed. “We are looking forward to more competitions before the National Open.”
The winners were also among the day’s winners were Benjie Duhac and Marika Lyka Sarmiento, the men’s and women’s 1,500-meters in 4:20.00 and 5:32.00, respectively.
MEN’S 100-METER RUN TOP THREE: Jerome Sarinas (left), Kenneth Paculba, and Christian Evanoso finished 1-2-3 in the second leg of the Mindanao Track League organized by Pinoyathletics.

Butuan 2.0 part of Pinoyathletics Mindanao Track League
The Pinoyathletics Mindanao Track League returns to Butuan again after its successful staging of the Battle of Butuan on the 24th of April 2021. Highlighting the meet will be the Men’s 100m Dash despite having to be scaled down due to the withdrawal of the Cagayan De Oro Athletes due to travel restrictions due to COVID. However, the meet will still push through.
The challenge is on for the competitors, and with the level of competition at this meet, we may even see a sub 11 run win the 100 meters at this meet. So far, only Fil-Heritage athlete Nolan Crespo has run under 11 seconds. This year, Jerome Sarinas, who ranks #2 in the Philippines Rankings, prepares to defend his Gold from April 24.
Headlining the meet is Former UAAP Junior MVP Jerome Sarinas. The 22-year-old Sarinas emerged victorious on April 24 at the Pinoyathletics Battle Butuan on April 24, besting 11 athletes clocking 11.17 (video time 10.6-10.8 hand-timed) and narrowly holding off Christian Evanoso, who was just .05 seconds behind in 11.22. Hence the 2 athletes from Butuan took Gold and Silver.
The 5’10 Sarinas, the 2018 National bronze medalist in the 400 Hurdles, ran 11.17 without starting blocks, equating to around 11.02. Just outside his lifetime, his Personal best of 11.09.
Aswell as a rematch with Evanoso Sarinas will have the challenge of running against John Kenneth Paculba, the UAAP Bronze Medalist in the 100m from 2018. Paculba ran his PB, taking that bronze in 11.02. Paculba will be representing his province of Davao Del Norte.
The 100 Meters men’s features 12 athletes, with the top 3 from each heat advancing to the Finals. Winners of each event will be awarded a new singlet as pictured below by our sponsors Masiv Sports.
The Women’s 100 Meters will be a straight final and an open affair with Lianne Pama (Misamis Oriental/Pinoyathletics) deciding not to join this meet due to travel restrictions. Cabunillas (Butuan City) and Duran (Team Buenavista), who finished with silver and bronze behind Pama, will start at the event.
In the Men’s 1500 Meters Benjie Duhac (Pinoyathletics/DND), who won the 3000 Meter’s in 9:47 on April 24, will be attempting to break his personal best of 4:14 and go under the SEA Games standard of 4:08.27. While the Women’s 1500 Meters has only four athletes, Maria Lyka Sarmiento (Pinoyathletics), a multiple UAAP Medalist with a PB of 4:54, will lead the women’s event.
