Baguio Bullet Igusquisa storms to victory in the Pinoyathletics Fantasia 60 Meter Dash for Men

Unheralded Mark Igusquisa of Baguio stormed to victory in the Pinoy Athletics Fantasia Virtual Meet in the 60 Meter Dash for Men.  Stopping the clock in a new Personal best of 6.95 (video time) on January 30th at the Baguio Bowl. One of two stadiums along with the famous Teachers Camp oval in Baguio.

The Baguio Bullet finished ahead of National Junior 400m Record Holder Alhryan Labita of Leyte (7.10) and 2019 SEA Games Bronze Medalist in the Decathlon Janry Ubas (7.17) of Misamis Oriental.

The 21-year-old Igusquisa is a DLSU Dasmarinas Cavite student, part of the PRISAA League, and has a Personal best of 10.84 from 2018.  An athlete that has just been getting a little better each year. Not an easy name to spell but surely one to remember as probably one of the best finds in Philippines Men’s Sprinting in 2021. He finished with a silver in the 2019 PRISAA Mens 100m Finals behind Rocky Ramos of Lingayen.

As a Comparison, the Philippines Men’s National Record for the 60m is 6.57 ran twice by Fil-Heritage athlete Eric Shauwn Cray. Cray goes to work on January 31, opening his season with a 6.75 at Birmingham, Alabama.

Busani Ndolvu of Zimbabwe topped the Junior Entries (7.26), with Lloyd Saysay of Baguio (7.28) and Christian Burgos of Team Iskolar Atletiks (7.46) taking 2^nd and 3^rd in the Juniors.

24 of 31 Entries completed the virtual event organized by Pinoy Athletics.

Better make it a double for Mahusay

Divina Mahusay quickly set to work blazing the track. Or, in this case, the asphalt runway again. But, this time with a win, if longer than she is used to running the 1000m.

Mahusay is undoubtedly the best sprinter in the 18 strong Womens 1000m field. However, she used her sprint speed to her best advantage—clocking 3:23.37 in a straight on the airport runway. The 17-year-old 400m specialist added this win to her 300m victory and 60m third place in the Pinoyathletics Fantasia Virtual Meet.

Mahusay made it a 1-2-3 Finish with her CANTAFA teammates Janice Nemi and Jennelyn Epa, taking the top 3 open and junior spots in the event. In fact, the Top 8 athletes in this event were all junior athletes. 

Palaro 1500 and 3000 Champion Lheslie De Lima also from Bicol representing the Rinconada Team was 4th.

 

1000M Womens Final Results

Janario defends title

National Junior 100 Hurdles Record Holder Karen Janario (Leyte) claimed sole ownership of the Women’s 60m Title at the Pinoyathletics Fantasia Virtual event.

In December 2020, the 21-year-old Janario tied with Lianne Diana Pama (CDO), with both girls registering 7.75 seconds to share the title at the Pinoyathletics 60m Dash for Cash.

This, Karen, who came out as the sole winner improving her PB from 7.75 to 7.72. 

Janario had earlier placed third in the women’s 300m at the Fantasia event.

The 2019 Palaro secondary girls silver medalist in 100 and 200, Pama came in second with 7.80.

And the galloping gazelle Divina Mahusay (CANTAFA), who had won the Women’s 300m, came in third in 7.86.

Pama was also the top Junior, with Mahusay the second-best junior and Aiko Ranara the third-best junior.

Only 13 of 24 Athletes entered completed this event.

 

60M Womens Final Results

Agawa is the Surprise Winner of the 1000m Run at the Pinoyathletics Fantasia Meet.

 

Louie Agawa (Baguio) took an astounding win from two better-known opponents at the Pinoyathletics Fantasia Meet. Running in the Dirt Bowl in Baguio, the 20-year-studied dies at the College of Saint Benilde in Manila. Clocked 2:35:00 (video), his STRAVA time, however, showed a much faster time of 2:26 (accuracy of Strava doubtful).

Agawa was the Philippine National Junior Champion in Ilagan in the Junior Men’s 3000M Steeple Chase in 2018.  When still in High school with Adamson University, he was the 5000 Meter Champion the last time the UAAP was held in December 2018.

The win saw him end the winning streak of 2019 Palarong Pambansa Champion Alfrence Braza of Iloilo. Braza had last month won both the 10,000m BBGRUNPH event of Roel Ano (32:01) and the 5,000m Pinoyathletics / Talking Chinoy event (15:03). Braza, who had opted to run on the road rather than the Iloilo Sports Complex, clocked 2:33.00 on Strava. But couldn’t present a ‘full video’ to produce a comparative video time. So Braza was given second place.

UAAP 800 and 1500 Record Holder Elbren Neri ran at Tangub City Oval, clocked 2:42.35 to take third place. 

Three CANTAFA athletes took the top three places in the Juniors: Leonel Lallo timed 2:51.00, Anthony  Esperaza 3:01.23, and John Paul Brutas 3:02.03.

Less than half the entries with only 12/25 completed this event.

• While we must compare Strava Time to Strava Time in this meet, we stated at the beginning of the meet; we will accept Strava times.
  • In the future, for 1000m, we will require a full video and no longer accept Strava Times for this distance.
  • Agawa is a 1:55 runner (800 runners), so a 2:36 (video time) breaks down to 2:00 (30 seconds per 20) and a finishing 36 sec last 200m. Thus, a 2:26 1000m is the sort of time we would expect from a runner who times at least 1:50 over 800m or faster.

The Grace of a Gazelle, 17-Year-old Mahusay wins the Pinoyathletics Fantasia Virtual Womens 300m Dash.

With all the grace of a gazelle, Divina Mahusay of CANTAFA flew to the win in the Women’s 300m at the Pinoyathletics Fantasia Virtual Meet (Jan 24-Jan 31), clocking 41.83 seconds, just outside her 41.5 Personal best on a standard rubber oval.

The 2019 Palarong Pambansa Bronze Medalist has already represented the Philippines at the ASEAN School Games twice.

Mahusay ran a 300m straight on an airport runway.  The crew brilliantly captured the feat on camera, who had a hauler attached to a motorbike’s side carike.

The 17-year old’s ambition is to make the Philippines 4×400 relay team for the SEA Games. Coach Allan A. Vega says the next goal is for Mahusay to run 56 seconds in the 400.

Mahusay backed this up after her 7.86 clockings in the 60m the other day.  

Philippines University Games Women’s 400m Champion Jessa Mae Jarder (Negros) timed 42.50, and Karen Janario (Leyte) at 43.24 took second and third.

Mahusay was also the Top Junior Athlete in this event.  2019 Palaro 100 Finalist Erica Ruto of Team Iskolar was 2^nd in juniors in 44.11 with Ruto Team Mate ABCD Agamanos 3^rd in Juniors in 44.76. Thus, 15 of 17 Women completed the event.

 

 

300M Womens Final Results
