3 Non-National Coached Athletes rule events at the last weekly relay qualifier
Last weekend at the PATAFA Weekly Relays in Pasig (Saturday, November 6). Saw a new batch of young athletes coming through, under the guidance of “non-national coaches”. Three 19-year-olds pulled off rather shocking wins over well-established national athletes.
Guhan qualifies with the fastest time to Men’s 200m
First off was Guhan De Luna Garcia from Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation team. The national silver medalist in the 200m. Who outwitted Alhyran Labita a member of the Philippine National Team in the 4x400m relay.
Guhan had a sluggish start in lane 7, with Labita leading in Lane 8. But coming off the bend into the straight Guhan, started to close down on the Afro-haired Labita from the University of the Philippines. Running over the top by around 50m and holding his composure against the 21-Year-old Labita. Guhan took the win in 22.12 (just outside his 22.00 PB on September 17).
Labita himself threw everything he had into the race and consequently improved his PB from 22.52 to 22.17 in the process. Labita also is the outright favorite for the 200M Title at the UAAP next month.
Gio De Vera (Guhans school teammate) took third in 22.53. Former national athlete Yuhei Go was 4th in 22.97.
Guhan and Gio coached by VMUF Sports Director Dhan Camaso and Enzo Williams of PinoyAthletics.
Guhan and Gio who are part of the powerful squad in Pangasinan now go into the Final on November 19-20 at Pasig, ranked #1 and #3 in Men’s 200m; the same Phil Sports Oval at Pasig were Enzo took the silver medal in the same event 17 years ago in a time of 21.80.
Lianne Pama’s fastest time in women’s 200m
The Women’s Sprints has been dominated for a very long time by Fil-Foreign athletes. Whether it has been The Richardsons, Kristina Knott, or Zion Corrales-Nelson. However, the Ultra Conservative Pama from El Salvador Mindanao is studying at the University of Santo Tomas. Pama was the silver medalist in 2019 in both the 100 (12.10w) and 200 (25.04) the last time the Palarong Pambansa was held in Davao City. Broke her long-time best in the 200m with a time of 24.82. But furthermore, she took a huge scalp bulldozing national sprinter Eloiza Medina by nearly a whole second (Medina clocked 25.75). The 26-year-old Medina who has been to the SEA Games 3 times is the 2017 SEA Games Gold Medalist in the 4×100 Mixed Relay.
Littlest Jumper beats the Great Khay Santos in women’s Long Jump
The third shocking win came for Diana Rysiamie (Adamson) who improved her long-time PB of 5.54 from 2019 with a respectable 5.74m jump. In the process beating not one but two national athletes. National Heptathlete Josefa Ligmayo took second in 5.62m, and national athlete Khay Santos the 2011 SEA Games Bronze Medalist in the Long Jump took third in 5.54m. More impressive is the heavily underestimated Hurano who had won Bronze medals for the Philippines at the ASEAN Youth and SEA School Games in Long and Triple Jump stands at only 4’9!!!. Taranza in a previous round jumped 5.85m, with Hurano qualifying 2nd in finals. However, Taranza only managed 5.26m on Saturday (Nov 6).
Also performing very well in the Weekly Relays was Hokett Delos Santos of UST coached by Emerson Obiena who leaped a new PB of 5.10m from 5.05m in the Men’s Pole Vault. The SEA Games Silver medalist only second to World Bronze medalist Ernest Obiena in the Philippines Rankings. Also impressive in the Men’s 200m was Bernard Ordinario a 6’0 Man Child in 22.66 in the Youth Boys 200m the 17-year-old Ordinario hails from Region 2 and studies at the UST. He beat Renier Ranges of VMUF/PinoyAthletics Elite the national school 100m Champion who is leading the 100m with 11.00 going into finals.
CONCLUSION “Non-National-coached-athletes”
Of the 3 Athletes, Guhan currently trains in the PinoyAthletics program. While during the pandemic Hurano was under the care of PinoyAthletics. And Lianne Pama while on the UST program provided events in Mindanao such as Mindanao Track League in Butuan and CDO SprinTopia by PinoyAthletics during the pandemic.
With the end of Juico’s Presidency over the PATAFA, PinoyAthletics welcomes necessary changes made to the sport by its new leader Terry Capistrano. In particular more productive performance output policies with regards to athletes being able to choose their own coach. WE ASK THIS IF AN ATHLETE IMPROVES WITH A NON-NATIONAL COACH THEN WHY NOT?
