A flood of athletes from Davao Del Norte, Davao Del Sur, Kidapawan City, and Koronadal City left somewhat bewildered with the weekly relays not pushing through as planned in their respective parts the country. The action shifted to Davao. In the 100m Dash, Palaro Record Holder Feberoy Kasi held off his brother Jeovannie 10.90 to 10.92 in a cutthroat race between the visitors from Cotabato.
In the 400m, Feberoy teammate, Marjun Sulleza, the Palaro 400 Hurdles Champion, took a tight finish to hold off Jumell Gonzales of Sto narrowly. Tomas National High School from Sto. Tomas, Davao Del Norte

The one-day event is divided into different sessions. The morning session is about the concept of Grassroots development models. The facilitator, Mr. Airnel T. Abarra, discussed the different paradigms in grassroots sport, sport for all, and elite sport as noted in the Education Through Sports Manual by the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA).
The next part is the case studies in German and Czech Grassroots and University Athletics system, as observed by the facilitator during his visits to the European Union. The community’s strength in the form of clubs serves as the backbone of strong Athletics programs and how regular local meets give elite levels a longer supply of athletes as coaches are on the regional levels to collaborate with local coaches.
Mindanao Blue Knights
On the afternoon session, the facilitator and the participants did practicals on formulating training programs. Using dynamic movements and training programs aimed at long-term development and assessment were discussed.
The praxis and interaction of both the facilitators and participants created a strong network of like-minded people for Athletics.

2017-2018 Mindanao Blue Knights Season 4 Round 2 Ateneo with Results and PATAFA Weekly Relays continuously being canceled
With the PSC-PATAFA Weekly relays canceled in Tagum and Koronadal due to lack of funding. This year The Blue Knights, which was established in Davao by Airnel T. Abarra with the help of Ateneo De Davao, pushed on with his fourth year staging. Mr. Abarra started his program as ‘part of his thesis’ but expanded on this concept through his European Athletics experiences. Has plans and interested parties looking at expanding into the further provinces in Mindanao.
The Blue Knights have already had one edition held at Tagum in previous years. At the same time, Davao Blue Knight officials were accredited by PATAFA last year. The meet is run with the support of individuals who contribute to the event as, unlike the PSC-PATAFA weekly relays, it is not funded by the PSC or the PATAFA.
The meet is in its 4th year of operation now, and the second leg was completed at Ateneo De Davao University. Ateneo De Davao University runs in partnership with a group run by another bunch of people called the Run out of Poverty Program. A Program aimed at helping underprivileged kids gain college scholarships.

Blue Knights Track League Season 4 Coaches Forum: Widen Your Perspective in Athletics
Jul 13, 2017
This season, the Blue Knights Track League Season 4 which is organized by the Ateneo de
Davao Track and Field Team Forums is an ideal way to gain new insights into the sport as a whole, and we can use it to continue to innovate our learning on how we see the sport and how Athletics events should be organized. That’s why the organizers of the BKTL4 went a notch higher with the launching of the “Coaches’ Forum Series.”
The fora are facilitated by different resource persons in and out of athletics. It also provides great insights into the sport and how it can be raised to form a new culture, especially in the Philippines.
Here are the details of the possible topics:

Spirit of the times: Reflections as a coach and meet manager of SMART Mindanao Blue Knights Track League Season 3
March 11, 2017
Airnel T. Abarra. Mindanao Blue Knights.
“The idea that the harder you work, the better you’re going to be is just garbage. The greatest improvement is made by the man or woman who works most intelligently.” – Bill Bowerman
Mindanao Blue Knights
In the course of three years as the coach of Ateneo de Davao University Track and Field team and proponent of SMART Blue Knights Track League Season 3, which had its finals at the Fr. Martinez Sports Center Track Oval, Ateneo de Davao University on 25-February, we had a season full of great moments which are both heart-warming and inspiring while also reflecting on what should be done next to improve the culture of Athletics as a discipline in Mindanao.
As meet manager of this event, which is running for almost three years, we continuously practice self-criticism to raise our standards. As a coach and meet the manager, you must be present in training and competitions and find ways to raise your community’s consciousness towards your sport.
As the only monthly Athletics event in Mindanao and perhaps in the whole of the Philippines, the Blue Knights Track League gives a chance for athletes in our region to see and meet National Athletes who graced the humble oval of Ateneo de Davao University. SEA Games Medalist in Long Jump Katherine Khay Santos opened our season with a bang last July 2017.
With him is UAAP Commissioner Atty. ReboSaguisag, and SMART Head for Mindanao Mr. Arnold Dellosa. Through this start, we want to prove that Athletics has its fair share of icons. We must provide models for our athletes.
After her inspiring feat during the 2016 Rio Olympics, Marathoner Mary Joy Tabal also take the time to run with the athletes in BKTL September Leg. Through her stories of challenge and success, Joy shared her experience as a former sprinter then turned long-distance runner. She had her fair share of stories on how odds all went onto her, especially the grueling moments during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Aside from people who grace the events in this years’ BKTL, we managed to bring the action to other communities. In partnership with the Provincial Government of Davao del Norte, especially its Sports and Tourism Office, BKTL had its record-breaking participation rate of 28 teams. It covered 3 major regions in Mindanao. A
As we resumed the games in January 2017, our loyal friends from Kapatagan, Digos Davao del Sur, once again shine with its prime product Ms. Meagey Ninura- the current Palarong Pambansa and National Junior Record Holder in 3,000m run. Meagey had the chance to share her message with aspiring athletes. In terms of participation, the BKTL January leg has reached the athletes of Kidapawan and Cotabato City.
On the 6th leg of BKTL, UAAP Athletics Champion Michael Carlo “Mico” Del Prado raced with Mindanao’s athletes in the 200m and 400m dash. Mico had a wonderful experience meeting other athletes in our region who are almost par with his abilities. Still, it gives the local athletes to learn from the experience of Mico. Athletes as well had the experience of being seen online via internet live streaming thanks to the efforts and expertise of the Ateneo de Davao comp group.
It may look like we made much effort this year, which is the product of the entire community of BKTL. Still, we are running on tight funds and limited resources, but we could secure more people and partners this year. Still, the proponents don’t rest on its simple laurels. There is still a lot of work to do especially as we moved to our 4th season in July 2017. Some of the things we want to improve are as follows:
Branding- the proponents are now seeking different individuals and groups to give BKTL a better sporting image next year. From the officials’ uniforms down to the quality of its identity, we seek a new breed of individuals who want to give BKTL a fresh look.
Efficiency- Given that BKTL runs on limited resources, we hope to find ways to make the race more efficient and not labor-intensive. We plan to use different technologies in results encoding and other parts of the game that need improvement.
Partnerships. We hope to the different legs of BKTL in different cities in Mindanao. Our goal is to have at least two legs, which will be held in different key locations in the region. We can introduce more the impact of independent Athletics meets, which is the core of a genuine grassroots sports development.
Self- As the meet manager, I really reflect on what I need to improve on myself. I raise the questions.
- If I am really a good ambassador for the sport?
- Am I really a good coach?
- Am I really living up to my ideals?
This season of Mindanao Blue Knights Track League provided me great lessons in life and how to beat the odds when others are not confident in my skills as a simple mover in Athletics. I had my fair share of people who try to bring me down, but when I see how athletes went home happy and thankful after each BKTL, all those rejections and criticism simply fades away.
Other coaches prefer to raise their athletes on the usual cycle of being a champion in the national meets and being in top universities in the capital.
- But did it change how athletes look at themselves?
- Did the athletes meet their idols?
- Did the athletes express their ideas, or will they be just treated as commodities for the sake of topping the points of their respective leagues?
Still, I believe that aside from winning, it is the values and character that must be developed by the athlete from their coaches.
I live up to my spirit, vocation, and reason why I want to raise Athletics’ culture in Mindanao. I dream that the 4th season will prosper more to reach its goals that time will come, we will set the Athletics program benchmark in the Philippines that BKTL will be the league of choice just like how my role models in world athletics build their field to let people come.

January 21 Davao Mindanao Blue Knights. Magic Meagey and Mindanaos Fastest man Yuhei Go Highlight (Schedule)
The 5th leg of the Davao Blue Knights 2016-17 athletic event. January 21 will explode at the Ateneo De Davao Matina Campus Oval in Davao City.
Reminder: SMART Blue Knights Track League Season 3 is OPEN to all athletes, with or without any club, team, or affiliation. Hope to see all of you on 21-January-2017
While the Meet is the project of Mr. Airnel Talatala Abarra, also, he is the head coach of Ateneo De Davao. The meet has PATAFA trained/sanctioned Technical officials.
While Abarra vision is to create a unique grass-root experience for athletes in Davao City initially and then in the rest of Mindanao, he also learned techniques and innovations from attending top international diamond league and Grand Prix events in Europe. Airnel brings a unique, professionally ran meet management technique to the people of Mindanao. A well-engaged meet where the participants are enthused and highly motivated.
While Mindanao is beginning to create its own programs, it is also trying to maintain its high-level athletes rather than sending them to schools in Manila. With the opening of several new sports academies and soon sports colleges. This vision to produce strong senior athletes in Mindanao for international meets may soon become a reality.
Also highlighting the meet, it is confirmed there will be teams from Zamboanga Del Sur, Tagum, Digos, Bukidnon, Surigao, and Cotobato attending and other parts of Northern Mindanao.

Magic Meagey Opens 2017 with 1500
The star attraction to this meet is Palaro Record Holder in the 1500 and 3000 Meagey Ninura. Who will be lining up in the 1500 meters? Meagey, who has a PB of 4.39 in 1500, will be up against 2015 Milo Youth 3000 National Champion Jonavie Tenebroso (5.04 & 11.05) of the Del Sur Sports Academy, a field of quite a few athletes. Meagey, preparing for her last year in the Palarong Pambansa, opted to skip the National Batang Pinoy to focus on her qualifying events for DAVRAA. Her DAVRAA meet will be at the end of March. Meagey, now in Grade 11, is still being considered by several American NCAA Universities after she finishes senior high school in Digos. Meagey is a Jollibee Yum Ambassador.
Meagey is coached by Maylene Quimque of Kapatagan National High School, who also contributed partly to another former Palaro Champion, Mae Barit, and 1500 and 3000.
Mindanao’s Fastest Man Yuhei Go
Mindanao Fastest man Yuhei Go will head again with Kasi Feberoy, the Palaro Record Holder. The half-Japanese Go, based in Cagayan De Oro, has a personal best of 10.5 seconds. He has made a few trips to Pagadian City to work with Provincial Sports Consultant Andrew Pirie and join trial meets theirs.
In his last encounter, Go was able to beat Feberoy. Feberoy holds the Palaro Record for 10.75 seconds. Go clocked 10.64 and wind-aided 10.57 at Pagadian after a 10.51 in Davao City.
Also possibly making an appearance will be James Guibone of Tagum, who has clocked 10.7 seconds. In fact, there are possibly 5 subs 11 seconds guys joining in what may be a very thrilling race.
Yuhei aims to ultimately lineup at the national open at the end of March against the country’s fastest men in the 100m and 200m. And hopefully, if luck shines his way, a berth in the 2017 SEA Games.
2016 Mindanao Blue Knights Track League DavNor: Report and Results
While 28 Teams turned up in total, the 2016 SMART Blue Knights Track League Season 3-PSC Weekly Relays DavNor Edition had record-breaking attendance during its first conference finals.
It was held at the Davao Del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex, Mankilam, Tagum City, Davao Del Norte, on 15-16-October-2016.
Different schools and clubs covering the regions of Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and SOCKSARGEN Region also showcased their skills in different Athletics events.
Also, the Blue Knights Track League proves how a community-based Athletics event can be sustainable.
Due to the efforts of the Athletics Team of Ateneo de Davao University and its Parents Community.
Head Coach Airnel T. Abarra constantly communicated with different Athletics coaches and clubs in Mindanao to invite them to join the event.
Most noteworthy is its recent partnership with Davao del Norte Sports Development Division Office headed by Mr. Giovanni I. Gulanes to make the DavNor Sports and Tourism Complex a venue.
With great staff and logistics, DavNor Sports augmented the community efforts of Blue Knights; hence it reached more participants of the monthly event.
First of all, a notable performer is the 15 yr old Tagum Sprinter Jeremiah Cortez, who clocked 10.9 seconds in the century dash and 22.7 at the 200m.
While other feats are Ateneo de Davao’s 12 yr old sprinter Ashanttie Kate Amaneo who captured double gold in 100m and 200m dash with a time of 14.2 and 30.9 seconds.
Also, on the long-distance side, Sto. Tomas National High School, Shame Igpit captured triple gold in 800m, 1,500m, and 3,000m steeplechase. St. Alexius Koronadal’s Marjun Sulleza reigned in 400m, 400m hurdles, and 200m.
Also, the Blue Knights Track League continues its vision to reach out to more communities; the organizers plan to stage the event in Koronadal City, South Cotabato, in January 2017.
Also, we are thankful to our partners:

2015 November Roundup Philippines Athletics – Blue Knights Track League Season 2: An Invitation to raise Athletics Culture in the Philippines
Blue Knights Track League Athletes/Participants during the “First Conference” (July-October,2015)
In its second season, the Blue Knights Track League paves the way as the first localized, and independent Athletics meet in the Philippines. Organized by the Ateneo de Davao University Track and Field Team headed by Coach Prof. Airnel T. Abarra, the Blue Knights Track League invites local athletes in Davao Region and other teams clubs in Mindanao.
Under the auspices of Ateneo de Davao-Office of the Athletics under Coach Emmanuel Rene “Noli” Ayo and the Ateneo de Davao University Varsity Parents Council, the league offer a better experience for athletes and coaches in the region by meeting icons of Philippine Athletics in its “First Conference” on July-November 2015 with Elma Muros,
Katherine Khay Santos and Saturnino “Titus” Salazar as guest speakers.
Starting from just 5 teams, now the Blue Knights Track League is reaching Davao Region and Koronadal City with nearly 80 athletes per month joining the events.
As they close their successful “second season,” they are inviting teams from different regions in the Philippines both in grassroots and élite levels to take part in the Blue Knights Track League Invitationals on 29-31-January-2016; the three-day event is not only an athletics competition but also includes training camps, coaching pep talks, and socials.

2. Blue Knights Track League Goes Live Streaming: A First in Philippine Athletics
DAVAO CITY- With its aim to further raise the culture of Philippine Athletics, the Blue Knights Track League (BKTL) Finals will be broadcast on full internet live streaming from the Ateneo de Davao University, Fr. Martinez Sports Complex Track Oval on 30-January-2016.
BKTL Meet Manager/Commissioner Prof. Airnel T. Abarra confirmed this after he met with officials of the Institutional Communications and Promotions Office (iCommP) headed by Paolo Villanueva with Igy Castrillo and Assistant to the President for Information
Technology Bernie Jereza expressed interest in this kind of initiative.
Prof. Airnel T. Abarra (Center) with Mr. Bernie Jereza (left) and Igy Castrillo (right) of the Ateneo de Davao University iCommP department on their meeting for the feasibility of internet live streaming the Blue Knights Track and Field Finals.
So far, the live streaming of the event is a first for Philippine Athletics. The country’s mainstream sports, such as Basketball, Boxing, Billiards, and Volleyball, are commonly broadcast-ed. But now, followers of Athletics in the Philippines will have the convenience of viewing the BKTL at the comfort of their computers and smartphones.
Athletes like Kris Nicole Batohanon (Blue Jersey) and Jean Christine Pongaron (Yellow and Aquamarine Singlet) will greatly benefit the reach of Blue Knights Track League Finals.
In Athletics competitions outside the Philippines, it is commonly observed that their events in Athletics are well documented and broadcasted even; it is a simple inter-club competition. Given that Athletics’ followers in the Philippines are a minority stakeholder in Philippine Sports, it is advocacy to think creatively to promote the sport and not just depend on the usual means of communication.
Elma Muros-Posadas and Katherine Khay Santos with the Ateneo de Davao Track and Field Family during the opening of the Blue Knights Track League in July 2015. We are inviting you to join us for the finals on 30-January-2016
Indeed, the internet live stream broadcast of the Blue Knights Track League is a trailblazer in Philippine Athletics; despite its humble background and minimal resources, it sets the pace to make the sport more appealing to the masses and reach the widest audience proving we can support more the sport through creative means and not settling on mediocrity.
3. Blue Knights Track League Season 2 Finals: Setting Firsts in Philippine Athletics (results & Full Video included)
DAVAO CITY– With a total of 15 teams and full internet live-streaming coverage. The Blue Knights Track League Season two finals paved its way to setting new heights in Philippine Athletics Culture. Being the only truly independent and sustainable Athletics (Track) competition in the Philippines.
Showcasing that regular and consistent meets is a way to raise the culture of Athletics in the Philippines.
Blue Knights Track League showcased how Athletics meets in the Philippines on a grassroots level with innovation and independence.
www.pinoyathletics.info has been a constant media partner of the Blue Knights Track League. The event runs for two “seasons” without asking any single centavo from any politician, government agency, and the National Sports Association for Athletics.
The proponents of the BK Track League Prof. Airnel T. Abarra ([email protected]) with the Ateneo de Davao University- Office of the Athletics headed by Emmanuel Rene S. Ayo proved that innovation and thinking “out of the box” is a way to promote the sport.
- We will discuss how BK Track League can be a “first” model for other clubs and local government units to look at.
- Management– By giving a chance for other people to become accredited technical officials, especially the students. BK Track League used volunteerism as a way to give a strong staff during the event.
Tapping students, former varsity athletes, and other stakeholders to be properly recognized as National Technical Officials. By doing this, the event will push through even without tapping other technical officials that will act based on the merits of their respective agencies’ bureaucracy.
- Independence– As we cited earlier, BK Track League never asked a single centavo from any government official or even the National Sports Association for Athletics (PATAFA).
Through constant communication from different stakeholders who are truly concern with the sport in the Davao Region.
BK Track League through the Ateneo de Davao Varsity Parents Council provided people and groups whom we can ask for food, refreshments, and simple incentives. The BK organizers want to instill values in athletes not to be dependent on money but for the game’s love.
That’s why we are very thankful to our main partners:
- 818 Sports
- HAWK Backpacks
- VIBELLE Distribution
- St. Francis Shell Stations
- Creating Keepsakes Cafe/Restaurant
- Pichola Bakeshop.
- Innovation– The experimental internet live-streaming coverage of the BK Season 2 Finals is a first in Philippine Athletics. To our knowledge, there is no local Athletics event in the Philippines aired live for the past five years. Thanks to the efforts of the Ateneo de Davao Technical Services Office (TSO) and Institutional Communications and Promotions Office (iCommP). Headed by Mr. Bernie Jereza- Assistant to the President for IT and Paolo VillanuevaiCommp, Chief Creative Director, the BK Track League could reach relatives of athletes and foreign Athletics journalists.
Culture- Through putting attention to details such as calling the athletes well and providing them a specific area where they can be screen and warm-up, BK Track League proved that it could think of other ways to make it better by making athletes feel they are real athletes and can be organized properly.
The learning process through inviting role models in Philippine Athletics such as Elma Muros-Posadas, George Posadas, Katherine Khay Santos (July 2015), Andrew Pirie, and Saturnino Salazar (August 2015). It gives athletes something to look on, and they can see that Philippine Athletics icons are within their reach, and they have something to be proud of.
An Invitation-With all been said and done. The Blue Knights Track League Organizers were already gearing up for the Season 3 Opening in July 2016.
So far, they are already looking on for a “reunion run” of two legends in Philippine Athletics, which we can’t be disclosed as of this time.
Still, we look forward that our stakeholders in Philippine Athletics will consider the model we had in running BK Track League. The event’s proponents are very much willing to share their ideas with other Athletics communities in the Philippines. So that we can build a better experience for our athletes and surely, people will come.

ADDU Monthly Track Meet First Season Ends With a Bang

Blue Knights Track League Season 2: It’s About Experience
July 5, 2015
Airnel T. Abarra
From its humble beginnings last year, the Blue Knights Track League is back for its second season. Its opening ceremonies fired off at the Fr. Martinez Sports Center Track Oval, Ateneo de Davao University Matina Campus on 05-July.
As it continues to strive to give better experience and activities for the athletes of Davao and Mindanao as a whole.
Believing that changing culture of Athletics as a sport in the “peripheries,” the Blue Knights Track League not only serves as an alternative venue for athletes in the region to get fully exposed on a regular and consistently run meet but also to learn from their idols in Athletics through a “track clinic” led by Coach Elma and Khay during the afternoon warm-up.
On top of this, the two national athletes shared their challenges, experiences, and struggles as national athletes. So that athletes can realize they must be strong both in mind and body to reach their goals.
“Huwag kayong sumuko, yang ating mga paa, malayo ang mararating nyan, sipag, tiyaga, at tiwala kay Lord”
this was the ecstatic message of Coach Elma Muros-Posadas to almost 150 athletes with their coaches, chaperons, and trainers.
After hearing their messages, athletes were taught by Khay Santos on proper ways of doing warm-ups and drills before the afternoon session.
On top of this, organizers make sure that all athletes will be given snacks and refreshments during the whole event so that their nutrition will not be compromised. Powered by 818 Sports and individual benefactors, simple incentives were given to the winners after the event as bigger prizes will be given on the first conference finals set in October 2015.
With the success of the first leg of Blue Knights Track League Season2, the Ateneo de Davao Office of the Athletics is firmly poised for its next edition this 01-August.

Davao City-Team Mindanao Blue Knights Monthly Track Meet Aims for raising the Culture in Athletics
Nov 29, 2014
For the first time, Ateneo de Davao University Athletics Office, in cooperation with Davao City Sports Development Division, organized the Davao City-Team Blue Knights Monthly Track Meet at the Fr. Martinez Sports Center Track Oval, Ateneo de Davao University Matina Campus whose first and second leg was done last November 29 and December 06
Teams from different public and private schools, including freelance runners in Davao City and Davao Region as a whole, including Digos and Tagum Cities, joined the meet, which is set to raise the program of Athletics by providing a regular and sustainable meet that will set as a training program for promising athletes in Davao. Powered by Scotch, Post-it by 3M, the meet is done once a month that leads to the grand finals on February 07, 2015. So far, aside from Manila, Davao is the only city in the Philippines with a continuous event in Athletics.
“Nasa probinsya ang pag-asa sa Track and Field”-
This is the statement of Asia’s Sprint Queen Lydia de Vega Mercado in her conversation with ADDU University Athletics Director Noli Ayo during his meeting with the Filipino track champion in Singapore.
With that belief, the ADDU Athletics team and Davao City Sports Development Division are passionately pursuing this meet and looking forward to its second season in mid-2015.
