Regarding Kiyomi Watanabe of the Philippines and Olympic Qualification for Judo in the women’s -63kg weight category.

March 2, 2015

Ms. Watanbe has the following results from 2014

  • Asian Junior Champion
  • Eliminated in the first round of the Tokyo Grand Slam
  • Top 8 in Asian Games

The Olympic Qualification Rules state two methods of qualification based on World and Continental Ranking Lists on 30 May 2016. As of today, there are the current standings.

The World Ranking lists were referred to as of the 1st of March 2015.

As known continental rankings lists are sourced. This was done by calculating the placings of the Asian countries on the world ranking list.

Only one athlete per NOC entered

  • Direct Qualification – Top 14 in the world per weight category – one athlete from Japan, Korea, China
  • Continental Qualification – two athletes per continent. Currently, these are Mongolia and Kazakhstan. Watanabe currently is ranked 7th in this category.

Philippine Judo Team 2 medals in HK Meet

22-year-old Monica Pineda bagged the silver while Helen Dawa took the bronze in their respective categories as the Philippines held its own against a cracked international field in the Hong Kong International judo tournament at the Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Center in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon recently.

Philippines vs Hong Kong in the 57kg Category

Pineda finished second in the under-45kg while Dawa placed third in an under-48kg division of the event that drew participants from Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.

This is a good selection of different nations at a high degree of competition but I will await the final results for further analysis to see if they were up against any SEA Games medalists.

Pineda who is a student at the University of the East is a newcomer and did not participate in the nine-athlete contingent that played in the 2011 SEA Games. She is not currently in the current training pool for Judo.  But this is a notable performance from Pineda.

The 11-member Phl delegation, supported by PLDT-Hong Kong Ltd. and headed by team manager Shalimar Tamano and includes seven national judokas and three young athletes from La Salle Greenhills.

Other Athletes

The athletes included SEA Games medalists Bryn Quillotes (bronze), Jenielou Mosqueda (silver), Gilbert Ramirez (gold), Helen Dawa (silver), and also newcomers Monica Pineda, Miguel Teruel, Francis Recio, Alvin Mendoza, Shaun Roxas, and Joaquin Miciano.

Last SEA Games Myanmar the Philippines won 2 Golds, 3 Silvers, and 2 Bronzes.

As of now the SEA Games 2015 only contains the lightest category of 52kg in Judo. Amending the event lists Pineda (45kg) and Dawa (48kg) having to bulk up or compete against bigger athletes.
