Janry Ubas World Qualifying Campaign Continues in Europe

Janry Ubas World Qualifying Campaign Continues in Europe

Janry Ubas, an Olympic hopeful, jumped 7.98 meters in the Men’s long jump.
He improved his previous best by 3cm, which he set on July 7 in the Taiwan Open, as he leapt 7.95 meters.
This meet, however, is not Ubas’ first and only opportunity to qualify for the Olympics, as he will pack his bags on Monday and go to Europe, where he will compete in three events from July 19-29, beginning in Italy, all of which are sanctioned by World Athletics as Olympic qualifiers.

Aside from these World Athletics-recognized meets, Ubas is also taking part in the coming 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on Sept. 23 to Oct. 8 where he has been projected as a possible medal contender.

Ubas sits at 69th in the World Rankings with 1141 pts. Currently according to the World Athletics stats zone the cut-off 36th spot for world athletics is Arnovis Dalmero (as of 18.07.23) with 1189pts. So far 16 athletes have jumped over the automatic qualifying of 8.27m.

Janry Ubas Finally! Gets his Gold

After years as the bride’s maid at the SEA Games level. Janry Ubas finally becomes the SEA Games Champion in the Mens Long Jump with a leap of 7.85m!!!
The 29-year-old Ubas is now in his 5th SEA Games.  Took the Philippines’ 2nd gold after Ernest Obiena won the pole vault on Day 1. Prior to that, he has a nice collection of silver and bronze medals over the years in the long jump and decathlon events.
Ubas started off his career with the national team at the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore where he took bronze in the Decathlon.  From there he took bronze in the Long Jump in 2017 in Kuala Lumpur. At the 2019 SEA Games, he took bronze in the Decathlon. Then in the 2021 SEA Games in Hanoi, he took Silver in the Men’s Long Jump and bronze in the Decathlon. After 5 runner-up medals. Ubas can now proudly call himself a SEA Games Champion.
The last time a Filipino Long Jumper claimed the SEA Games title was the Great Henry Dagmil who won it three times in 2005,2007 and 2013. Now 10 years later the Long Jump title is back with the Filipinos and Ubas continue a proud long jumping tradition. Coming up next for Ubas will be the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China 23 September to 8 May.

Worlds and Moving Forward

The World Athletics qualifying is 8.25m which closes on May 30 for outright qualifying for the World Champs in Budapest. However, if Ubas gains enough world athletics points that is also another pathway to qualify. If Ubas and his coach decided to focus on Long Jump only.
For the majority of his career, Janry Ubas has been under Dario De Rosas’ tutelage.
Ubas who was competing in the Decathlon also in Day 2, had to nip back and forth as the Decathlon Javelin was held at almost the same time as the individual long jump. Suttisak Singkohn of Thailand his long-time rival defended his Decathlon title in 7468 pts, Ubas took silver in 6923 pts, and 2017-2019 SEA Games Champion Aries Toledo also from the Philippines bronze in 6891 pts.
Mr. Suttisak of Thailand (276) of Thailand congratulates Mr. Ubas for winning Gold in the Long Jump right before the last event the 1500m of the Decathlon.

Janry Ubas First Filipino over 8 Meters shatters national record

Janry Ubas has become the First Filipino to break the elusive 8-meter barrier in the Long Jump with his massive 8.08m personal best in the Decathlon today. The wind reading was good at +0.0. So his mark breaks the former Philippine record of Olympian Henry Claridad Dagmil  7.99m set on June 7, 2008.

Ubas mark also shattered the SEA Games Record of 8.03m of Sapwaturrahman of Indonesia at the 2019 SEA Games in New Clark Philippines.

The 29-year-old Ubas is a veteran now on his 5th SEA Games. He has silvers and bronzes in the Long Jump and Decathlon. But the gold medal has eluded him. Maybe this is now his time to become SEA Games Champion in Long Jump and/or the Decathlon.

World Level

Ubas leads the Decathlon after 3 events by 158 points from defending SEA Games Champion Suttisak of Thailand.

In the Long Jump Sapwaturrahman has a PB of 8.09m from 2018. Has leapt 7.94m so far this year. It will be a very interesting Long Jump dual later on in athletics.

The World Athletics qualifying is 8.25m which closes on May 30 for outright qualifying for the World Champs in Budapest. However, if Ubas gains enough world athletics points that is also another pathway to qualify.

Ubas hails from Villauneva, Misamis Oriental. He has been coached his entire career on the national team and most of his collegiate career prior to that by Dario De Rosas.

Janry Ubas Sets Nabs Bronze at Asian Indoor Championships

Janry Ubas joined an elite company of athletes to take bronze at the Asian Indoor championships. It was the only medal for the Philippines in the 2023 edition from the 6-man contingent at Astana, Kazakhstan. After a somewhat disappointing Long Jump. Ubas bounced back to take the bronze in the Heptathlon.

His score of 5245 pts, broke the previous National Record of Jesson ‘The Panda’ Ramil Cid who had 4565 pts in Guangzhou 9 years ago.

Ubas was third behind Maruyama and Okuda of Japan. He finished ahead of reigning SEA Games Decathlon Champion Suttisak of Thailand who came 4th.

The last time the Philippines took a medal at the Asian Indoor Championships was in 2016 when Eric Cray took bronze in the 60m. Ubas delivered as world-ranked Pole Vaulter Ernest Obiena was unable to attend due to logistics issues flying poles into Kazakhstan.

Getting the Grospe of Things

Meanwhile, Leonard Grospe improved his National Record Indoors from 2.14m to 2.15m landing 7th in the Final. The only South East Asian athlete to join this competition.

Janry Ubas Sets New Philippine Indoor Record

Astana, Kazakstan (Feb 11)

At the Asian Indoor Championships after failing to do so in the long jump event Janry Ubas cleared 7.42m (Feb 10). Ubas topped the Heptathlon Long Jump clearing 7.66m. This erased the Philippine Record set by Fil-Heritage athlete Donovant Arriola (7.64m) which was set on Feb. 6, 2015, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the Lobos Invitational.  Arriola was the 2015 SEA Games Bronze Medalist

Ubas also now is sitting in third place in the Heptathlon behind 2 Japanese athletes after 2 events on the morning of Day 1 of the Heptathlon Event

Janry Ubas Athlete of PATAFA Weekly Relay Finals 7.88m Long Jump

Janry Ubas delivered what the performance of the Weekly Relay Finals was. Dishing out a superb 7.88m to tie his own personal best set in 2017 was no fluke. Ubas’ previous 7.88m was not a world athletics-sanctioned performance, so the 7.88m becomes his official personal best.

It was an unforgettable weekend for the 28-year-old Ubas who was the best athlete performer in the Finals at Pasig with a Gold and PB in the 100m of 10.96 (first time to go sub 11 sec) and a 35m+ throw in the Discus.

This a testament to the hard work put in by his long-time coach Dario de Rosas
Ubas is the SEA Games Bronze medalist in Decathlon in 2015, 2019, and 2022. And SEA Games Silver in the 2022 Long Jump and Bronze in the 2017 Long Jump.

While having quite a collection of Medals, Ubas has been very consistent this season frequently over 7.60m at all the events he has joined. And hopes to add that elusive SEA Games Gold medal to his collection in Cambodia in 2023.

Janry surpasses SEA Games Gold Standard in Long Jump

PASIG, June 3, 2017

During the second PATAFA Time Trial on June 3. Janry Ubas, 24, solidified his place in the 2017 SEA Games Athletics Team for the Philippines. Besides, he leapt a splendid 7.88m.

Similarly, he followed up with 7.80m and 7.70m jumps. Besides, he also reported some fouls in the 7.90m range.

Above all, the impressive jump shattered his previous PB of 7.55m at the National Championships.

The winning leap in the last SEA Games was 7.75m by Supanara of Thailand, who won the 2009, 2011, and 2015 SEA Games Long Jump titles. Ubas was the bronze medalist last SEA Games 2015 in the Men’s Decathlon.

Fil-Heritage jumper Tyler Ruiz who has leapt 7.79m, is most likely to join Ubas at the SEA Games. Besides, Donovont Arriola, who got Bronze in the 2015 SEA Games, was injured.

For instance, the leap Ubas is the #2 jump of all time, and he currently leads the SEA Ranking list for 2017. However, only Olympian Henry Dagmil 7.99m in 2007 has ever leaped further. Ubas is trained primarily by Dario De Rosas, the head coach of FEU, Ubas studies, and Dario’s assistant Joebert Delicano.

Besides, Rone Malipay, who trains with Delicano, improved his Triple Jump PB from 15.55 to 15.67m.

The Rise of Janry Ubas

Sept 22, 2014

Article by Andrew Pirie

ATFS Statistician

The School FEU that nurtured Jesson Ramil Cid has produced another talent in the Decathlon.

In the second heat of the Week, 10 of the Weekly Relays at Pasig (14.09.14), Janry Ubas is a hot chance at hitting the SEA Games Bronze mark Decathlon.

He improved his 100m Personal best with 11.1 to win the second heat, holding off FEU schoolmate and National 110m Hurdles Champion Clinton Kingsley Bautista

Janry by points calculation is at around 6423pts assuming he gets very slow (54.90 in the 400 and 5m30 in 1500, he would have improved that 400 times by now, and he was yet to register a time in 1500).

Not Yet a Member of the Training Pool

Janry, who is not yet a member of the National Training Pool but should be strongly considered, is being trained by Dario De Rosas, head coach of FEU.

His assistant, former SEA Games multiple triple jumps and long jump medallist Joebert ‘Grover’ Delicano, also holds the Triple Jump National Record.

With input from national Coaches Emerson Obiena in the pole vault and Dario De Rosas, the head coach at FEU.

The 5’5 Ubas finished second at the PNG to Tyler Ruiz in the High Jump (2.05m, PB 2.06m) and won the Pole Vault as Ernest John Obiena was training in Italy at the time.

Assistant FEU Coach Joebert Delicano has decided to focus on the Decathlon.

Ubas will target the Decathlon SEA Games standard of 6383 pts. He is sure to not only surpass but, given 6500-6700 points, is capable of landing the bronze. Behind fellow alumni Cid (7069 PB) and Zakaria Malik of Indonesia (6783/6629 this year). In conclusion, Ubas will challenge Nguyen Van Dat of Vietnam (6383).
