Herman Suizo

Remember marathoner Herman Suizo?

Born 19 January 1959 s a native of Santa Barbara Iloilo and once a footballer. Santa Barbara is a hotbed of football where some great Ilonggo football players came from.
In 1983, Suizo shocked the running world when he beat his idol and mentor, the late Jimmy Dela Torre during the Bombo Iloilo Marathon.
Suizo moved to Manila in 1986 to compete against strong Gintong Alay Runners such as Mario Castro and Primo Ramos.
But, it was in 1988 during the PAL marathon when Suizo established his name in the marathon by beating fellow Filipino and top seed Primo Ramos. After this, he joined the Gintony Alay and started training with the late Rosito Andaya and Langurayan.
Herman Suizo later went on to become the only Filipino Male or Female to win Back to Back SEA Games titles in the Marathon crowning himself champion in 1989 and then defending his title in the 1991 Manila SEA Games.
In the same year, Herman Suizo set the national record when he clocked 2:19:50 in the Seoul Marathon. That record stood for almost 10 years until it was broken by another Ilonggo named Eduardo Buenavista who clocked at 2:18:44 during the Tokyo marathon.
In 1992, Suizo joined the Barcelona Olympics and finished 52nd place in the Marathon.
Suizo who is now 61 years old is currently retired in his hometown in Iloilo.
