Big Ed Delina. Hurled the Discus Throw to 45.11m at the PATAFA Weekly Relays on October 7 at Pasig.
While this is significant as the mark surpassed the National Junior Record of Arniel Ferrera (44.35m) set at the 2000 National Open.
The weight of the Discus was 1.75kg. Hence, Arniel threw 44.35m when he won the Junior Discus, Shot put, and Hammer in Manila at the National Open.
Also, I was at the national open at the time.
And recall Ferrera took a significant chunk off the previous Junior Record.
Furthermore, Arniel became a 4x SEA Games Gold Medallist in the Hammer and still holds the National and National Junior Records in the Men’s Hammer.
In contrast, the reason we use the term ‘surpassed’ and not passed. This is because we are waiting for the PATAFA to verify the weight of the implements for the Junior Record and Previous Junior Record. At the same time, Pinoyathletics will go ahead and list this as a new mark on our records.
And the Fact Ed Delina was Born on March 15, 2000, giving him over a year to improve his National Junior Record.
Ironically this was the same year Arniel broke the National Junior Record.
Also, please note that in the Men’s Division, for events such as UAAP College level and UAAP, use a 2kg Discount.
First of all, Delina threw 44.11m, 44.66m, and 45.11m with his three throws.
Hence Two of his three throws surpassing Arniel’s old record.
Most noteworthy is that Fidel Repizo, during the 1991 Manila SEA Games, threw 52.10m. In contrast, this is still the national record.
And Repizo became the only man ever to win the Discus gold at SEA Games for the Philippines.
I want to develop my self, learn new skills, and be a part of national team someday. – Said Delina who sees himself very much as a work in progress who still has lot to learn.
Palarong Pambansa Record Holder
He hails from San Felipe, Zambales, in the Central Luzon Region. And started in athletics at age 14 in Grade 9.
Yes sir. Ah I take up Athletics because its an individual event so that i can excel on it. And i know if im going to excel on this sport i can study college for free. – Said Delina who is taking up a Bachelors of PE at University of the Philippines Diliman.
While Delina’s father works as a security guard, his mother is a housewife.
Also, Delina stands a towering 6’1 and is almost 100kg at 94kg. He is the Palarong Pambansa Record Holder, where he threw 42.67m.
The Giant Delina has a Filipino Passport and has already had a taste of International Competition. At the same time, he suited up for the 9th ASEAN School Games a few months back but could only manage 6th place with a 44m throw.
“We just started with weights, we are just doing circuits only just starting to teach power lifts”said Delina’s UP coach Karl Francisco who was a former UAAP standout and member of the national training pool at one time.
