Archand Bagsit – 2021 Tokyo Olympics

Archand Bagsit Introduction:

• In an interview that also featured Phil Spada Coach Joel Deriada.
• There could be as many as 9 Grand Prix meets coming up for Bagsit to have many chances to qualify for the Olympics.
• There will be no 200m events at Olympics, only 100m and 200m
• The 100m and 400m standards are 11.10 and 50.4.
• As well as Bagsit, 6 other athletes are near qualifying standards for the Olympics, including Rowell Galvero in the 5000m and a long jumper who does 6.20 but needs 6.30m to qualify for Tokyo 2021.

Please note the T12 World Record for 100m is 10.44 set in 2019, and 400m was 47.79 set in 2019.

We will talk about Archand Bagsit’s career, his rapid rise from an unknown athlete at Letran Sports, to his national team journey.

The Philippines could very soon have two Olympic qualifiers in Athletics

2013 SEA Games 400m Champion Archand Bagsit is making a comeback of sorts. This time as a Para-Olympic athlete. 

The 29-year-old is aiming to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. As per the Athletics Australia website, the qualification is 10.98 for 100m and 50.00 for 400m. But Athletics Australia usually sets standards higher than the actual entry standards. Bagsit has a lifetime best of 10.6 (100) and 46.88 set in 2014.

As of now, only Ernest Obiena has qualified in Athletics for the Philippines to Tokyo Olympics. When PATAFA made their pres cons and media announcements, they forgot to mention Bagsit. When we think about it should be a breeze for Archand to qualify and join EJ at the Olympics, he has the most chance out of the remaining athletes yet to qualify.

Bagsit is classified as Low Vision T-12. 

History of Bagsit

Bagsit said he had been partially impaired visually since he was a kid but still managed to compete in regular events. 

This journey led Bagsit to NCAA Records representing Letran before the National Team picked him up in 2010.

He took the SEA Games Silver in the 400 in Malaysia in 2011. Before claiming the Gold in 2013 in Myanmar making it a 1-2 finish for the Philippines with his teammate Edgardo Alejan.

Bagsit also won Gold Medals as part of the Mens 4×400 team in 2011 and 2013. He currently is part of the National Record in the Mens 4×100 with Eric Cray, Anfernee Lopena, and Trenten Anthony Beram.

Conclusion:

Archand was removed from the National Team in 2018 and has focused on qualifying in para events since then.

Archand was supposed to have his first para competition in the 2019 ASEAN Para Games that the country was hosting, only to be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He was lined up in the Para games in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m relay.

Par swimmer Ernie Gawilan has already qualified for the Tokyo Para games, while table tennis player Josephine Medina is an outright alternate.
