ATHLETICS | Forty-eight athletes will comprise the Philippine Athletics team at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia in May.

Olympians and reigning SEA Games winners Ernest John Obiena and Eric Cray alongside other defending champions Kayla Richardson, William Morrison, Clinton Kingsley Bautista, and former titlist Kristina Knott spearhead the team which targets to surpass the five-gold medal showing in Hanoi.

PATAFA Secretary General Edward Kho told RP2 that the lineup was decided based on results from Philippine National Open and recent competitions plus the athletes’ records.

Notably missing on the list was 2021 pole vault silver medalist Hockett Delos Santos, who was replaced by US-based Elijah Cole.

Two other Fil-heritage athletes, sprinter Umajesty Williams, and hurdler John Cabang-Tolentino will make their debuts with the Philippine team.

However, sprinters Angel Frank, Danae Manibog, and Lauren Hoffman have yet to acquire their Philippine passports and most probably will not make it to their first stint at the SEA Games.

Robyn Brown, Kyla Richardson, Maureen Schrijvers, and Bernalyn Bejoy are ready to take their place in the 400 meters and the relays.

Also included in the team are Anfernee Lopena, Williams, Frederick Ramirez, Knott, Kayla Richardson, Schirvers, and Jessel Lumapas in sprint events.

Edwin Giron, Mariano Masano, Bernalyn Bejoy, Alfrence Braza, Sonny Wagdos, rookie Josh Buenavista, Joida Gagnao, and Abigail Manzano compete in the middle distance while Richard Salano, Christine Hallasgo, and newcomers Arlan Arbois and Riuffa Sorongon see action in the marathon.

Other athletes are Clinton Bautista, John Cabang, Jelly Pragile, Melissa Escoton, Cray, Alhryan Labita, Brown, Bejoy (hurdles), Junel Gobotia, Buenavista, Manzano, and Gagnao (3,000M steeplechase), Leonard Grospe and Ernie Calipay (high jump), Obiena, Cole, Natalie Uy, Alyanna Nicolas (pole vault), Janry Ubas and Marvin Rafols (long jump), Mark Harry Diones and Ronne Malipay (triple jump), John Albert Mantua, William Morrison, Jamela de Asis, Aira Teodosio (shot put), Mantua and Morrison (discus throw), Teodosio (hammer throw), Melvin Calano, John Paul Sarmiento, Evalyn Palabrica, and Ginna Malapit (javelin throw), Aries Toledo and Ubas (decathlon), and Sarah Dequinan (heptathlon).

Sixteen officials and coaches namely Kho, Renato Unso, George Posadas, Dario De Rosas, Isidro del Prado, Jeoffrey Chua, Sean Guevara, John Lozada, Eduardo Buenavista, Emerson Obiena, Danilo Fresnido, Arniel Fererra, Jeffrey Kiel Richardson, Edward Lasquete, Joey Neimon Scott, and Emmanuel Calipes complete the Philippine athletics delegation to the SEA Games.

All foreign-based tracksters, except EJ Obiena, will fly to Manila on May 1 and join the whole team in a sendoff before their departure the next day.

Athletics competition opens with the men’s and women’s marathon on May 6 in Siem Reap while track events start on May 8 with 200-meter sprints, men’s pole vault, and the 4x400m mixed relay highlighting the action at Morodok Techno National Stadium in Phnom Penh.
