EJ Obiena: Philippines’ Top Contender
Pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena, currently ranked second in the world, is being hailed by national coaches Isidro del Prado and Dario De Rosas as the Philippines’ prime contender to clinch a medal in the upcoming Asian Games. The 27-year-old athlete, who recently secured a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in Hungary, is the centrepiece of the Philippines’ aspirations.
Historical Significance
During a recent PSA Forum at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, Del Prado emphasized in Filipino that “EJ is our golden prospect in the pole vault.” It’s noteworthy to mention that no Filipino track and field star has secured a medal at the Asian Games since Elma Muros’ 1994 bronze in the long jump.
4×400 Meter Relay Team’s Ambition
In the 4×400 meter relay at the Asiad, the team of Umajesty Williams, Frederick Ramirez, Joyme Squita, and Michael Carlo Del Prado, son of Isidro, are set to compete. Del Prado highlighted the challenge by stating, “India, Japan, China, and Sri Lanka are dominant in the 4×400 meter event, pushing our team to outperform the Philippine record of 3:06.47 and hopefully reach the finals.”
Notable Absences
Meanwhile, despite meeting the SEA Games gold medal criteria, Hussein Lorana missed the 800m Asian Games lineup after skipping the Asian Championships. Fil-American athletes Lauren Hoffman, Angela Frank, and Danae Manibog also didn’t make the cut, possibly due to passport issues.
