2022 ASEAN University Games Athletics Underway as the Philippines doesn’t enter any team
The 2022 ASEAN University Games started already in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. Surprisingly the Philippines via the FESSAP failed to register a team in time. FESSAP whose focus was on the 2022 World University Games which was postponed to 2023. Did not register for an Athletics team. While other sports such as Swimming were well represented.
FESSAP Stated due to its long-time membership in the FISU it had prioritized the world University Games instead. And also went on to claim it was much cheaper? to go to World University Games in Chengdu China then travel to Thailand?
Despite this, the trips are almost entirely self-funded by the athletes themselves. The cost to go to World University Games came out as a total of 40,000 Pesos per athlete to cover themselves.
Yet at the World University Games we will end up as nothing but tourists as most of the athletes FESSAP approved on the trip would be looking at coming dead last in the heats.
We need to remember World University Games is a high-quality event maybe just behind the Olympics and World Championships in quality of Athletic events.
Meanwhile, the 2022 ASEAN University Games is an event where we can win medals and serves as a good tuneup event for the SEA Games.
The issue here was not due to FESSAP central management as Swimming was well represented at the ASEAN University Games, and it seems Athletics is one of the only sports not represented by the Philippines at this event.
