2018 Youth Olympic Games Asia : Veruel Verdadero Makes the Semi-Final (June 20)
The Philippines’ lone representative Veruel Verdadero coached for the last 4-5 years by Fernando Dagasgas of Dasmarinas.
While accompanied by PATAFA auditor Jeanette Obiena. Veruel Verdadero clocked 11.16 in Heat 4, finishing 5th in Bangkok.
Veruel Verdadero’s time was well off his Personal Best of 10.87.
He qualified 15th of 16 athletes from around Asia born in 2001 or after to the Semi-Finals later tonight. Veruel Verdadero recently moved to JRU for Senior High school to work with Jojo Posadas.
He timed 11.18 in Semi-Final 2, placing 8th and not advancing to the Final, finishing up 14th of 16. Veruel Verdadero was given another run in the B Final, where he ran a similar time of 11.22.
Schedule
The 3rd Youth Olympic Games will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, on July 4-6. While I do not have the list of entries from the Philippines yet. So I will be posting updates on the qualifying standards. And the list of those who have made the standards. Furthermore, please watch out here for updates.
Hence due to popular demand, I located the schedule on the Singapore Athletics website. Youth Olympic Games are held every 2 years between the Olympic Games. 2010, 2014, 2018.
The top 2 athletes from this meet and the other next fastest qualifiers based on a quota system proceed to a final in Argentina October 6-18.
At the last Olympic Youth Games in 2014, the Philippines was represented by former Philippine 400 Record Holder Zion Corrales-Nelson. At the same time, Nelson took bronze in the Asian leg in the 200 and 400. Most noteworthy was she just focused on 400 in the Youth Olympic Games Finals, where she finished 4th in heat 3. At the same time, she finished 4th in the B Final and 12th overall.
Furthermore, to my knowledge, nobody was sent from the Philippines in the 1st edition in 2010.
Therefore the Philippines will be represented by Veruel Verdadero, the Palaro Champion in the 100 and 200 Meter Dash the last 2 Palarong Pambansa.
