2015 Philippines National University Games Athletics Bacolod: Sprints Men’s Report: Michael Del  Prado makes a name for himself

It was Michael Del Prado who took the 200-400 double. But, most noteworthy was Del Prado snatched the 200 titles away narrowly from defending champion Anfernee Lopena. Yet by 1/100th of a second in an epic sprint finish.

Please note that the Uni Games is not sanctioned by the IAAF or its agent PATAFA. Hence the performances here are not credible for

  • National Records
  • Qualification for international meets
  • national team selection
  • or national rankings.

Therefore the meet has the equivalent status of a time trial performed in training.

Lopena defends Century Dash Title.

Anfernee Lopena (CSB) defended his title at the 2015 University Games at Panaad Park.

Lopena timed 10.7 to narrowly hold off the rising William Galceran, 19 (FEU), who gave an identical time.

Another athlete PRISAA Champion Alvin Valdenarro (DLSU Dasma), was also credited with 10.7 for Bronze.

Simultaneously, former Palaro Champion Romnick Nor (UST) missed out on a medal 4th in 10.9. And UAAP Champion Clinton Kingsley Bautista never really got out of the blocks well and faded to fifth in a slow 11.3.

Examining the video, I cant see how Lopena was given the same time as Galceran and Valdenaro when he was one stride or around .1 – .15 ahead. Lopena is the NCAA Record Holder and a member of the training pool.

Mighty Mike Pips Lopena in the 200m Dash

Lopena in the 200

Anfernee Lopena looked destined for the sprint double and retained his 200m title. Coming off the bend, Lopena was commanding six strides ahead. Then, suddenly, with 50 meters to go, he started to feel cramps in his quads.

Hence Michael Del Prado (DLSU) had won 400 meters. Consequently, an epic came from behind victory to narrowly pip Lopena 22.02 to 22.03 (ht). While fast-finishing, Romnick Nor of UST snatched the Bronze. (200m final results to come, please email pinoyathletics@gmail.com if you have them)

Mighty Mico takes 400 Title.

Michael Del Prado of DLSU, the 2nd son of National Holder Isidro Del Prado, continued to lower his time in the 400m. While Michael, the UAAP Bronze medalist last year, has reduced his time from 49.89 to 49.75 to 49.3 to 49.0 (48.92). And he is looking like the hot favorite to win the UAAP title next year. While Coming in second was Dustine De Vera of UST in 50.6. And bronze went to Palaro Champion John Kenneth Nodos of DLSU in 50.8.

Men’s Long Jump: Julian eclipses SEA Bronze but meet not sanctioned

Julian ‘Happy Clowns’ Fuentes of College of Saint Benilde won the Men’s Long Jump, one of the most electrifying individuals in Philippine Athletics. He is especially relevant because he is the athlete of former PATAFA head Coach Joseph Sy.

In conclusion, Fuentes leaped 7.53m, just two centimeters off his PB of 7.55m set at the 2015 National Championships. Where he had gained the silver medal. Most noteworthy, Fuentes still holds the Palaro Record from 2012.

The Crowd went loud for the Peoples Champion “Chanting Happy Clowns! Happy Clowns!” as he sped down the runway.

The clown’s mark of 7.53m is already above the SEA Games bronze standard of 7.51m. Because unfortunately, the Uni Games has no sanction from PATAFA. So he will need to hit the mark again. Therefore he has about 2 years to do that before the 2017 SEA Games.

Not bad, considering there was no take-off board. Probably indicating a 7.70m up jump is possible.

While SEA Games Decathlon Bronze Medallist Janry Ubas representing FEU was second with 7.19m. And SEA Youth Champion and Asian youth bronze medallist Jerry Belibestre of Bacolod Recoletos was third with 7.16m.

2015 Uni Games Bacolod: Sprints Women’s Report Sprint Double for Eloiza Luzon

Eloiza Luzon took the 100 & 200 sprint double. Simultaneously, Jingky Obanon defended her 400 titles at the 2015 Uni Games. Please note that the Uni Games is not sanctioned by the IAAF or its agent PATAFA.

Hence the performances here are not credible for National Records, Qualification for international meets, national team selection, or national rankings. Therefore, the meet has the equivalent status of a time trial performed in training.

Luzon wins the 100m Dash.

UAAP Champion and ASG Bronze medalist Eloiza Luzon (UST) had the fastest times in the heats of 15 with 12.2 (.19). At the same time, She clocked slightly faster in 12.2 (.14) to win over teammate UAAP Silver medalist Glaiza Salcedo 12.5. And Palaro silver medalist Elrica Guro of DLSU 12.6.

Luzon Does the Double

UAAP Silver medalist Eloiza Luzon (UST) took the 200m Final in 25.1. While quite outside

her 24.95 PB. Most noteworthy, she beat Palaro Champion and training partner Karen Janario 25.3. Hence Luzon added this to the 100m title she won yesterday. And Palaro silver medalist Elrica Guro (DLSU) took the bronze.

A very Jingky 400

Jingky Obanon (RTU) defended her 400 titles in a Personal Best of 57.5 (.48). At the same time, Heptathlete Sarah Dequinan of UST took silver in 59.10. And Shaira Hernandez of DLSU took the Bronze.

It was a memorable double for a former member of the national training pool Felyn Dolloso of DLSU Dasmarinas at Bacolod’s 2015 Philippine University Games.

The Former National Junior Record Holder in the Triple Jump won her third Uni Games title with a leap of 12.53m. Consequently just 2cm off her PB in Dumaguete way back in 2012. Most noteworthy is that Marestella Torres holds the National Record of 12.67m. Especially relevant the SEA Bronze is 13.64m. So Dolloso would need a leap of 13.00m up to return to the National Training Pool.

While Angel Carino of DLSU was second in a PB of 11.88m, and UST Judy Almasa took the bronze.

Carino, Dolloso and Judy Almasa

Most of all, this is probably the best we have seen from Felyn Dolloso of DLSU Dasmarinas. While in the last few years, the former National Junior Triple Jump record holder and national bronze medalist took the Women’s Long jump with 5.63m. Also, just outside her 5.70 PB from the Thai National Open.

Furthermore, the 22-year-old mentored by Marestella Torres and Arnold Villarube is a former national training pool member. The second was National Junior Champion and UAAP Champion Angel Carino of DLSU in 5.58m (PB 5.65m). And Judy Almasa (UST) took Bronze in 5.39m.
