2015 Philippines National Games Luzon Leg

Day 1 Report (July 3): Rosales Returns

 This is my delayed coverage report for the Athletics segment of the Philippine National Games Luzon Leg held at Philsports in Pasig, the meet was held July 3-7. As I have had a lot of other things on and am reflecting right now moving forward this report is now only available. Article on Kettlebells.

Rosales Returns

After not having competed or being seen at the track since the UAAP for almost 8 months. Jenyrose Hernandez  De Rosales took an easy win in the Women’s 400m Dash. Albeit her time of 58.98 was nowhere near her UAAP Record of 54.45. She comfortably cleared off the challenge of Jessa Padeway of Baguio 1.02.23.

 Still unsure of her plans Rosales declined an offer to go to the 2015 SEA Games in the 400 Hurdles and join the training pool to focus on her application at PLDT and supporting her family.

In the girls, Division Louielyn Pamatian (UST) won 59.58 (bronze in UAAP 57.31), from teammate and Palaro Champion Feiza Lenton 1.00.05 (PB 58.66).

 

Toledo and Galleon

National Silver Medalist in the 200m Aries Toledo (CLSU), who pulled up with cramps and didn’t finish in the national 400 Finals in March took the win in 4 .07, her und ran 48.7 (hand timed) in the heats. Popular actor Jericho Ejercito (DLSU) was fourth in 51.72.

In the Boys, 400m Russell Galleon the Palaro silver medalist took the win in 50.65 (PB 49.97). Palaro Champion Kenneth Nodos (PB 49.66) could only manage 52.58 in the heats and was eliminated from the competition.

 

Mantua solo Phil Airforce Representative takes Shotput win

John Albert Mantua, 21 the NCAA Champion hurled his way to a new personal best of 14.30m. Mantua was the sole representative of the Phil Airforce team that withdrew from the meet as a lot of the members were not allowed to participate as Members of the National training pool were not allowed to join. Mantua who is now coached by National Coach Nixon Mas’s previous best was 14.04m at the NCAA in February. The Phil Airforce which is the National Open and PNG Team Champions in Mens pledged to field a strong team and give full support to the PSC-PATAFA Weekly Relays starting in August.

ASEAN School Games Bronze medalist Carlo Caong of CSB took the Boys Discus in 41.54m, finally beating long-time rival Regan Contic of Baguio 40.44m, ASEAN School Games shotput Champion Bryan Pachecho of FEU took bronze in 40.04m. Palaro Champion John Capasao now at Mapua was seventh in 38.57m.

While in the Men’s Hammer Geoff Rodriguez of UP took the men’s Hammer in 37.28m.

Riza Sombilla (UST) took the Shotput at 11.52m narrowly from Ateneo’s Vanessa Baquinet at 11.05m.

100/110 Hurdle Finals

2014 UAAP Champion Michelle Loterte of UST dead-heated with 2014 Palaro Champion Melissa Escoton of DLSU with both clocking 15.48. Loterte whose fall in the UAAP Finals had cost her title hung onto the win.

Meanwhile, a faster time came from National Junior Record Holder Karen Janario, 16 (UST) who clocked 15.28. Janario whose time of 14.52, got her second by .01 at the ASEAN School Games broke the Junior Record set in 2002 by Julie Rose Forbes (14.61).

Audrey Yorac of UP was second in 15.74, Yorac who dead-heated at the UAAP to get the silver in a time of 15.19 was also nominated for the ASEAN School Games along with Janario.

Decathlete Ian Delos Santos won the 110 Hurdles in a rather slow 16.1. While in the boys returning from injury was UAAP Junior Record Holder Jaime Mejia (UP) who clocked 15.35.

Jumps

Fil-Belgian beauty Maureen Schrijvers, 20 of DLSU the Palaro Pambansa record holder tied her PB from 2012 with a 1.63m effort to win the Women’s High Jump.

Rone Malipay of Lyceum took an easy win in 6.82m in the Mens Long Jump.

Happy Denuyo of UST took the womens long jump in a very weak field with a leap of 5.24m.

Day 2 Report (July 4): Ramos qualifies for ASG Ramos qualifies for ASG Long Jump

In the Boy’s Long Jump Mark Vincent Ramos (4th 2014 ASG), stole the second spot for the ASG with a PB of 7.07m to win the Boy’s Long Jump. Ramos improved his PB from 7.01m and took the 2nd spot from Dela Pena (6.98 at UAAP). Dela Pena could only manage the bronze here with his 6.71m effort. Jerry Belibestre who leaped 7.26m in Doha to land Bronze at Asian Juniors will join Ramos at the ASG in Brunei in November. 2014 Palaro silver medallist Kirk Bacas was fourth in 6.59m.

Meanwhile, Audrey Mariane Yorac (UP) added the High Jump to the Hurdles to her list of events for ASG. Yorac won the High Jump girls in 1.60m just outside her PB.

Keith Margo Quilo ensured one tick for the ASG with a 2.00m PB to win the boy’s High Jump, he however will need to hit this mark two more times to be safely qualified for ASG. SCUAA Champion Richmond Ramos was second with 1.90m.ASG Champion Bryan Jay Pachecho (FEU) won the Junior Shotput in 14.49m.

 

Century Dash faster times to the Junior’s

The Womens 100m was a straight final with Aldee Denuyo (UST) who was fifth in the UAAP taking the win in 12.78 ahead of Melva Cawid of Baguio City the PRISAA Silver medallist (12.94).

However, the quickest woman in the meet came from the junior division. With UAAP Champion Eloiza Luzon of UST winning in 12.66 (still outside her 12.10 PB). And her UST teammate Glaiza Salcedo took silver in 12.81. Palaro finalist Celestina De Castro of Adamson University took the bronze in 13.06.

 

Mens

PRISAA Champion Alvin Valdenarro (DLSU Dasmarinas) took the 100m title in 11.09 a new ET PB. UAAP 400m Champion Gabriel Soriano (UP) took silver in 11.18. And Allan Paul Plana (RTU) who was a finalist at the national open took the bronze in 11.27.

The fastest time also came from the Juniors in both genders. Palaro Champion Ivan Manjares, 16 (CSB) clocked a personal best of 11.08 in the heats. He again improved on this in the finals in 11.05. William Galceran (FEU) who was bronze in the junior race in the Weekly Relay finals last year took silver 11.34, while National Open Junior bronze medalist

Philip Austria now at Mapua took bronze in 11.37.

The Girl’s quartet of Glaiza, Luzon, Pamaybay, and Karen Janario won the junior 4×100 in 48.99, outside the 48.49 mark with the same three except Olorvida instead of Pamaybay’s last ASG. It was faster than the UST woman who timed 50.47. UST also won the Boys 4×100 featuring former Palaro Champion Romnick Nor.

 

Throwers

Jessah Fernandez the country’s best women’s hammer thrower and the National Junior Record Holder took the gold with a 38.46m effort, ahead of UST teammate Cristelle Ferrera the younger sister of 4x former SEA Games champion Arniel 35.53m.

UP Jenelyn Arle the National Junior Champion in the shotput won the girl’s shot put with 10.38m.

UAAP Bronze medalist Louielyn Pamatian (UST) took the 800 in an easy 2:20.51 well off her 2:13.97 PB. Her teammate Feiza Lenton Palaro silver medalist in this event was second in 2:25.64.

Meanwhile, Johnfrey Opendo of Baguio helped himself to the 800m title in 1:56.68 with National Champion Marco Vilog not turning up. Newcomer Ace Abalos of CLSU (Nueva Vizcaya) won the 800 in 1:58.82

Gilbert Rotaquio won the boy’s Steeples in 10:23.60.

Cesar Castenata of Baguio almost dead-heated with Greg Osorio of Team Titus in the Mens 10k in the very slow time of 35:57.06 to 35:57.57.

Day 3 Report (Jul 5): Loterte takes five Golds

Michelle Loterte (UST) collected three more gold medals in the 400 Hurdles in 1.08.61 (quite far from her 1.02.21 PB at the UAAP) and the Triple Jump gold in 11.50m. Loterte easily won the 200m dash in a rather slow 26.75 from Celina Revalde (UP) and 2013 PRISAA silver medalist Jessica Bautista (PLDT).

Michelle added this to her two Golds in the 100 Hurdles and 4×100 relay bringing her total to five.

“I am happy with my wins here but I want to win again in the finals” said Michelle.who took the bronze in the 400 Hurdles at the ASEAN Uni Games in Palembang last December.

More Multiple Golds

Michelle’s teammate Karen Janario, 16 (UST) bagged her third gold in the 200m in a time of 25.63. Janario narrowly held off UAAP Silver medalist and teammate Eloiza Luzon 25.75. Janario who is a product of the Leyte Sports Academy. But is now studying at UST took gold in the 100 Hurdles and 4×100.

Another UST team mate Louielyn Pamatian the UAAP Champion took her second gold with a PB of 4:50.81, and her roommate Feiza Lenton was second in 4:56.26.

Sombilla of UST threw 34.50m in the Javelin to go with her shot-put gold.

Newcomer Aries Toledo (CLSU) the National silver medallist in the 200 claimed a huge victory in the 200m with a win of 21.99, more than a second ahead of Gabriel Soriano who is the UAAP Silver medalist, and came second in the 100m on day 2.

Meanwhile, Jhonfrey Opendo (Baguio) claimed his second gold in the 400 Hurdles in 56.27 to go with his 800m win on Day 2. Gerard Morales (UST) the UAAP Champion was second in 57.69. In the boy’s event, Jaime Mejia (UP) the UAAP Junior Record Holder did enough to win in  57.09.

43-year-old Danilo Fresnido of the Philippine Army a 2x former SEA Games champion in the Javelin won in 59.90m over national champion Kenny Gonzales of FEU at 58.71m.

Also claiming multiple golds was Jenelyn Arle (UP) the ASEAN School Games Bronze medallist in the Javelin whose throw to win the girl’s Javelin of 34.20m was about 6 meters off her personal best.

FEU Jomar Angus added another gold with an easy win in the 1500m in 4.04.97.

 

Lasangue easy win in High Jump

 

National Champion Manuel Lasangue easily won the Mens High Jump in 2.05m, although his performance here was not as good as his 2.10m at the National Championships in March. Lasangue has been nominated to rejoin the national team after being removed in 2014.

NCAA Bronze Medalist Jojo Bermudo of Lyceum of the Philippines defeated his teammate Rone Malipay NCAA Silver medalist 14.50 to 14.38 in the triple jump.

Judy Almasa (UST) took the girl’s Long Jump in 5.30m, which was better than the senior winning jump of 5.24m by her teammate. Another teammate Alyssa Andrade who is the National Junior silver medalist was second with 5.13m.

Fel Vincent Quetulio of UP won the boy’s Hammer with a good throw of 43.05m.

Unheralded Junrel Bendoy of RTU got the better of the favorite Edgar Bardel (Team Titus) in the 10k walk.

 

Day 4 Report (Jul 6): Emily Obiena breaks own National Junior Record

The meet highlight was the breaking of one Junior National Record no senior records were broken in this meet.

ASEAN School Games Bronze medalist Emily Jean Obiena improved on her national record of 3.20m with a leap of 3.25m. Followed by 3.30m at the Philippine National Games Luzon Leg. The 16-year-old is the sister of SEA Games Silver Medalist and National Record Holder Ernest John Obiena. And daughter of National Coach Emerson Obiena. Emily has enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas. And not only follows the family tradition of Pole Vault. But also the family tradition of Engineering.

Unfortunately, the Pole Vault was not included in the 2015 Brunei ASEAN School Games.

NCAA Record Holder Johnrey Mabuyao took the Mens Pole Vault with 4.05m.

 

Melinda is back on the track veterans’ move

After a long absence, former SEA Games medalist and 20k Walk Record Holder Melinda Delos Reyes (nee. Manahan) returned at the Age of 41 to take gold in the Luzon Leg in the 10k Walk with a time of 55:15.85, narrowly beating UST Krisha Sardenia 55:23,73 the UAAP Champion in the 3k Walk and Elizabeth Capioso 55:30.45 of UP.

 

Cardona and Castenato mastermind Second Gold

Lany Cardona (Baguio) added her second gold (10k) winning the 5k easily in 19:50.54 from Lyra Baytan of DLSU. Meanwhile, her teammate Cesar Castenato masterminded a brilliant win in 15:20.44 nearly a minute ahead of Greg Osorio of Team Titus to take his second gold

ASEAN School Games Silver Medalist Kevin Capangpangan secured his spot in the 1500m for 2015 with a 4:04.98 win in the boy’s event, nearly five seconds clear of second place.

Luzon, Pamatian, Janario, and Pamaybay joined forces to win the 4×400 Girls title for FEU in 4:07.32, some 10 seconds clear of Adamson University. While the boy’s team also claimed the gold.

Former UAAP Champion Joel Sta. Mina who is one of the assistant coaches at FEU took the Discus gold at 40.49m ahead of the returning Eugene Tan (PPVC) at 38.89m.

Newcomer Pablo Rogil (CSB) won the boy’s Triple Jump in 14,24, beating Palaro Silver medalist Kirk Bacas (FEU) in 14.22, and Boys long jump champion Mark Vincent Ramos (MIT) in 14.12. Palaro Bronze medalist Rosnani Pamaybay (UST) won the girls in 11.29m.

 

Multi Events

National Junior Champion Sarah Dequinan won the girl’s Heptathlon with 3911 points. The Mens Decathlon was won by Joseph Bernard Capinpin which was his first win. With the absence of SEA Games Medalists Cid and Ubas and National Training Pool athlete Efraem Gesulgon.

Capinpin of Ateneo a newcomer to this event and better known as a sprinter/jumper collected

5533 points narrowly edging off Mabuyao 5497.
