2014 Batang Pinoy Samantha Limos breaks the Batang Pinoy 100 Meter Record of Karen Janario (Interview video)

November 29, 2015

Samantha Limos (844) far-left takes BP Record.

Cebu – Batang Pinoy A new talent emerged in the interesting world of Philippines Women’s Sprints. Only having taken up sprints a year ago, 13-year-old Cebu’s Samantha Limos stopped the clock at 12.48 to not only comfortably hold off Gianelli Gatinga (12.75) and Eliza Cuyom (12.98) of NCR.

Limos also erased the record of Karen Janario of LSA (12.53) set last year. Limos, a first-year high school student at the University of Cebu, in an interview with pinoyathletics.

I want to be Palaro Champion this year. (pause). Yes, also in the 100 and 200m dash.

If she can pull off the win at the Palarong Pambansa, the humble athlete would become the first non-4th-year student to win the Palaro since Rhemilyn Soriano of Pangasinan pulled this off the 2006 Palaro.

Rhemilyn younger sister Briceline finished 5th in the Cebu BP Final 2015. Since then, the Palaro title has gone to a different athlete each year, a fourth-year student.

Pinoyathletics advised Limos if you win, you must defend the title for 5 years in a row. So it comes as a good time to revive Cebu’s women sprints with Ateneo Cebu Breatny Canete winning the Milo Little Olympic Finals in Cebu.

“Im not sure if i want the hard training that goes with being a national athlete one day” said Limos. “I want to get a scholarship and finish my studies.” said Limos who is an honors student the daughter of a teacher and a church minister.

Limos will try to make it a double with the 200 meters tomorrow. As a matter of interest, her time of 12.48 is the fastest recorded by a 13-year-old Filipina, ahead of Kyla Richardson, 12.69 at the same age.

Limos have made a rapid improvement, having only placed fourth in the Palaro in Tagum in 14.21 in May, she has improved nearly two seconds since then.

While Limos hasn’t heard of SEA Games Champion Kayla Richardson or watch the SEA Games, she is new to the sport. So Pinoyathletics advised her to watch it on youtube.

The Arca Piglets now hold 5 Records in the Batang Pinoy. Interestingly, all these athletes come from what in the Gene Machine book is described as a ‘Hot Spot’ with only 400 students keeps churning out multiple age-grade champions the last 4-5 years.

As Miguel and Addy school teachers raise pigs to help supplement income to support their athletes, the athletes have been christened the piglets by Pinoyathletics. Their latest prodigy Jerry Belibestre recently broke the ASEAN School Games Record in the Long Jump.

The Arcas had decided to help build the sports program and depth of talent in Bacolod by refusing all offers from Manila schools for their piglets.

Gianelli Gatinga

Gianelli Gatinga and Veruel Verdadero were the MVP of the 2015 Batang Pinoy Cebu in Athletics. Gatinga,15 of SFAC who has competed at her fifth and final Batang Pinoy, took three golds. Gatinga broke her own meet record in the Long Jump with a 5.30m leap, a personal best, she tied her meet record from last year in Bacolod with 11.64m and then helped her team win the gold in the 4x100m. Gatinga also took silver in the 100 Meter Dash behind Samantha Limos in a personal best of 12.75.

Gatinga missed out on the ASEAN School Games due to selection issues, highlighting in my next post. Is the Palaro Champion in the Triple Jump in Tagum with a personal best of 11.79m? She also tied this performance during the weekly relays.

Gatinga, who represents SFAC in Taguig, is trained by Jimmy Gunsian.

Samantha Limos evaluation of 100m Dash (100, 200 videos)

The impressive thing about Samantha Limos is that her times were not only the meet record of impressive juniors Karen Janario but faster than Kyla and SEA Games champion Kayla Richardson at the same age.

While Limos missed out on the 200m Record of Janario this year with 25.86 and 25.99 in heats and finals, she still has another two more years in Batang Pinoy to get that.

;

Here are some observations from Limos 100m Run

  • Not the worlds greatest starter
  • They hit the top end later than the other runners
  • Perfect hip extension
  • Excellent hip flexion
  • Excellent lead leg reach
  • Unusually long stride for a 5’1 girl
  • Much better stride frequency at the top end than other runners in the race
  • Runs Tall
  • She holds composure and straight arm swing the last 30m where she pulls away from the field

Girls 200

Below is a video of the Girls 200m Video from the Batang Pinoy; Gold went to Samantha Limos of Cebu, who clocked 25.86 in the heats and 25.99 in the finals. Just outside the meet record of Karen Twiste Janario 25.76 set in Bacolod last year. As she did in the 100m, Limos pulled away the last 30 meters from her opponents due to more stable upright running and efficient arm swing. Palaro 400m Bronze medalist Jessel Lumapas of Dasmarinas took silver, and Palaro 200m Bronze Medalist Briceline Soriano of Pangasinan took bronze. After these wins, limos now set herself up as the palaro favorite in the 100 and 200m dashes.

Meanwhile, in the Boys 200 Finals. Veruel Verdero of Cavite/EAC tied the Boys 200m Record with a run of 23.23. The 14-year-old clocked one of the fastest times in the country for his age.

2015 Batang Pinoy Athletics – Full Results & Report

November 29, 2015

2015 Batang Pinoy Athletics Full Results: Inaccuracy in timing in Heat 2 of Girls 100m

I think the paper results of Heat 2 of the girls 100m need to be checked. It is especially relevant that 12.04, 12.09, and 12.12 from Limos, Gatinga, and Cuyom are very inaccurate. While I had requested a copy of the paper results from ‘The Great Domh’ of PATAFA.

Hence Limos, Gatinga, and Cuyom timed 12.48, 12.75, and 12.97 in the finals. Furthermore, according to my data, the times in the final are the fastest times these three girls have ever run. So I think it isn’t very certain in the heats, they would have run significantly faster.

Hence consider comparatively in the Finals, Cuyom ran only 12.97 to Soriano and Beronio, who ran almost the same time in the heat. Yet, in the heat, she is nearly a whole second ahead.

Therefore 12.04, 12.09, and 12.12 were hand times. This would give them 12.1, 12.1, 12.2, 12.4, 12.4, and 12.5 in electronic timing, which seems more plausible but still doubtful.

This issue needs to be fixed as it would give these 3 girls an unfair advantage in selection. As it gives them a higher placing in the national ranking lists with doubtful timing.
